Hello fellow Escapists! There's been a lot of hype about the game Amnesia: The Dark Descent lately on here. However, I noticed that Penumbra has received a lot of hype as well.

I can get the Penumbra Collectors Pack on Steam for $20, just Penumbra: Overture for $10, or Amnesia for $20. I have played the demo, and Amnesia runs perfectly on my computer, so hardware is not an issue.

TL;DR: I have extra money that I want to spend on either Penumbra or Amnesia, and was wondering which was better to purchase.

Please give me your opinions on which is a funner/scarier/all around better game, and thanks in advance.

EDIT: I have made my decision and purchased Amnesia. Thanks for the help guys!

Penumbra: Overture was kind of scary, but in Amnesia, I had to just stop playing the game because it got so scary. I've never done that before, and I'm a huge horror fan.

Amnesia has more.. what's a good word.. practical puzzles. There's one puzzle in Black Plague that involves fried computer chips and.. you know what? I don't want to get into it.

They're simply more logical.

Overall, Amnesia is probably the better bet, but you should definitely look into Overture and Black Plague if you can.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I played the demos for both, and loved both of them. The more advanced graphics in Amnesia are also not a factor for me.

I own Amnesia but I've never played any of the Penumbra games, I would only vote for Amnesia because the total omission of combat makes surviving all the more difficult and terrifying.

Amnesia has a better Metascore (by 12 points!) so I think that's what I will purchase. I will update if I do buy it soon.

Again, it's a far more enjoyable experience for newcomers. I think you'll enjoy your purchase.

Amnesia is better in my opinion. Plus, the first Penumbra game has combat. Needless to say, it's absolutely abysmal (I though we had gotten past click-and-drag combat).

Ohhh ohhh, look! Another thread where I can spread the word!

*ahem*

The games are rather similar in many ways. Both are first person horror games with lots of puzzles and a bit of stealth. However, Amnesia is the new and improved version. A refinement of the formula if you will. In particular, the removal of combat definitely makes for a better game.

While I can't offer an opinion on Amnesia, I stopped playing Penumbra: Overture because of the combat. I got stuck because I was incapable of killing a spider with a rock. I really wanted to like that series, too.

Amnesia, Penumbra is amazing too and I would definitely recommend you get that too but get Amnesia first.

I haven't completed Amnesia yet, I got a couple hours in and haven't touched it since it scared me that bloody much.

Amnesia is definitely heavier on the scary scale, I couldn't play it very long without taking a break.
