I was just reading through that post with their most dissappointing games. I saw some responses that made me el o el. Someone didn't like Bioshock because their computer is teh suxx. Someone else mentioned Starcraft because it "turns out I don't like RTS's". Someone else said they didn't like KOTOR because it was "tough". Although that topic is subject to personal opinion, I still think they are flawed.

I have a fairly open mind about all games, I played and enjoyed Morrowind, Oblivion, Hunter: The Reckoning, Odin Sphere, Kingdom Hearts 1+2, Mechassault 1+2(+online), Star Ocean TtEoT, NWN2, TQ, BFME2, FEAR(+expansions), Every C&C made, Hellgate:london, Halo 1-3 etc, just to give you an idea of my wide range of tastes. I enjoyed all of these games, despite people having QQ about them all. I don't necessarily agree with the design choices in all of them but they were/are fun and most of the games I've played inspired emotion from me.

So I am wondering, what do you guys think creates the most dissappointment for a game release?

Attack me with extra comments I want to explore the pysche of all of you Raz style!

When hype is being pushed by the designers themselves, you know there's something wrong with the game. Second one being the heavy handed comments by them. Fable is a prime example of this.

While we're on this topic, was the claim that Hellgate:London was going to be the next Diablo II a public conjuring? Or was it straight from Flagship?

About Fable, I fully agree. I own both OG and The Lost Chapters and enjoyed them very much, but I went in expecting nothing and got a fairly fun experience out of it. If I expected more I might have been ready to rise up and slay.

As far as i recall it, people were more disappointed by Fable than they were by Assasin's Creed, so the greatest disappointment should be heavy handed claims.

But i think somehow it's something out of everything. I mean, Public Hype is mostly created out of the Marketing by the Publisher who, more often than not, use the claims of the developers to give the impression that this game will be the best thing since sliced bread.

There are of course exceptions, but i think that is the way it goes most of the time.

Bad games.

But if I had to say one of the options, I'd say heavy handed designer claims. It kinda smacks of desperation when a developer comes out and says 'buy this game, it's A.I system will be akin to the second coming of Christ'. That always sets players up for disappointment.

Hype by designers. Public hype is easy to avoid, heck most people creaming their pants for something like cod4 really shows their level of intelligence. It's more the designer videos and previews that promise so much with the game not delivering at all, that sets me back ( bf2 is a great example of this ).

I know you guys say that the hype around Fable sucks but I have to say to you

"Shut the fuck UP, I loved the hype around fable and I loved that game. It was never a serious RPG and if you play it that way then your bound to be dissapointed. How can you dislike a game that lets you walk around and fart on people....and then marry them?"

I'm kidding though, I value your opinions.

Still hype isn't a bad thing. I wasent a big fan of shotters till I played the hyped up the arse halo and now I can't get enough of it.

I suppose what dissapoints me the most is when the game sucks. I don't care if the game was hyped crazily or if its unknown If I bought it and it sucks then I'm dissapointed.

Sequels evoke disappointment most often than not. Like the movie industry, a "smash hit" especially if it is an unexpected one will set the bar far higher for the next int he series if there is one, and many times, the games while purchased and somewhat appreciated will also evoke disappointment in gamers.

I've heard the old line "it wasn't as good as the first one" so many times from people when it comes to sequels that I could play a recording of it and never run out of voices on tape. Whether or not a game lives up to the bar set by its predecessor obviously depends on the game/series/etc., but more often than not, if people are disappointed by a game, it's because it was a sequel or followup and it just wasn't as good.

For me, any game that claims to have a well integrated, original, spellbinding, edge of your seat story then turns out to be a checklist of cliches and stereotypes with slightly better graphics will be spammed by me faster than I can uninstall the game at.

But generally I don't believe the hype in 99% of games, especially now that I've played the demo of crysis with full specs and been let down at what I've played.

Like Crysis, or Fable, or most others you care to mention, it's not that the games are bad, but when you're told something's a revolution in gaming and you find it's only slightly different to before, it can seriously hack me off.

In Crysis' case, it's like Farcry but with none of the humorous dialog with the cocky protagonist, the graphics seem... well, unhappier somehow, and they've uppered the racism a somewhat.

But game companies don't care about about bad feedback because you can bet your kidneys by the time the bad feedback has been made away, they've already sold 1 million copies and invested all of your money in a very rich investment bank and are laughing in your face.

What I tend to do now is wait a year or two after the hype has died THEN buy the game, that way I won't be expecting as much since time has moved on.
