In multiplayer games (most likely FPSs) do you prefer to have weapon pickups on the map, such as in Halo or Quake, or do you prefer loadout classes, such as in Black ops or Bad Company 2?

Even though I enjoy class based sometimes, pickups are simply more balanced. Everyone starts at the same point, and after the initial weapon rush, the game continues better off.

Doesn't Halo sort of have classes in Reach? Not customizable ones, mind you, but they still have different starting weapons and abilities. I like those sort of classes because you can start with whatever weapon you like best, but all the really good weapons need to be picked up, so it still has balanced gameplay.

If you are talking about customizable classes, then those are bad. They prevent new players from being able to compete with veterans. And I know, veterans will know where all the best weapons are to pick up, but it is much easier to learn where weapons are than it is to build up a character to have the best weapons and equipment.

Classes most definetely. The reason I stopped playing Halo online was the weapon pickups. One guy gets the rocket launcher, at least 4 free kills for him. Then someone grabs a sword and murders 10 of my oblivious teammates. Be the one who spawns closest to the power weapons and become GOD!

Class system prevents new players from winning? Not entirely true. I play MW2 a whole lot and at least 50%, maybe more are not at level 70 thus not having everything unlocked. I am level 70, but I'm using a gun you get at level 8 since I think its best for me. Having custom classes is not inherently bad, but it most certainly can be bad if you do it like Bioshock 2 did.

The problem there was that you could unlock a freaking heat seeking rocket launcher that murdered everything and as a new player you had no chance. That was a bad implementation of custom classes.

Pick ups because they emphasize skills such as map knowledge and control which are needed to win a game in Halo but are not neccessary in COD.

For the most part, I prefer classes. I think CoD4 did classes right. They outright gave the best weapons to you from the start. At the max level, my class load-out looks similar to the basic classes with the LMG replaced by the MP-44 and some perks switched around for optimization.

Although, I also love games which mix the two. For instance, in United Offensive, you have your starting class, and weapons such as panzerfausts and FG-42s lying around to be picked up.

It really depends on the game. Unreal Tournament wouldn't work in a class format, just as Call Of Duty wouldn't work as a pickup format. Too many weapons in Call Of Duty, for one thing. Yeah, I'm sitting on the fence.
I don't really prefer a format, but I do seem to prefer the games that use pickups. They're usually just more fast paced. Then again, both TF2 and Source are loadout games, sooo... Nope, back on the fence.

Classes, as in TF2, not COD. All players should be on a level playing field which is something TF2 achieves, from what I hear COD doesn't.

Although for plain old deathmatch pickups are awfully fun, especially if the game is nicely balanced. Quake 2 gave you the equally potent rocket launcher, rail gun and double barreled shotgun. All insta kills in the right hands and in the right situation.

Classes. I don't like my games to be decided by who controls the rockets the longest. I want it to be pure skill. Yes map control requires skill, but it's still not the same as 1v1 with equivalent weaponry.

I much prefer Pick ups, because there is always a mad dash at the start to get the best weapon (easy kills)
