It's about the person and the style. I see way too many girls get them trying to make themselves look edgy and cool, while they don't understand that they just look awful - bogan chicks with muffin tops and horrible hipster jeans showing off their trashy tramp stamps on their backs, augmented by a tongue piercing thy can't keep in their mouth but have to constantly suck and fiddle with... ughhhh.
But then there are other times, and other people, and piercings can look cool. Hot chicks with nose rings, guys who get eyebrow or ear piercings. The ones who know what they want to look like and are doing it for themselves, not for others. I'm not a goth, but I used to have a mate who was, and, on him, spikes through his ears were normal and I'd have missed them if he ever took them out.
I like bigger rather than smaller rings, studs, etc. If you are going to smack your face through a hardware store, you might as well look proud of it. I hate tiny ones, like someone's gone through the pain, but is now to ashamed to do more than just keep the tiniest marks...
I only have my ears pierced, once each ear. I occasionally think about getting somthing else, but my boyfriend really doesn't look all that impressed when I mention it, and I haven't the money or patience to get more anyway. I suppose it's just not essential to how I feel about how I look.
