At what ping rate do you consider the lag to be unacceptable?

I can't do anything above 150

Someone from the other topic on this exact subject said that ping is internet connection delay in milliseconds.

For FPS and RTS games, you have to have a >100 ping to really compete. I remember back in the day that games like Red Alert, Starcraft and Total Annihilation were quite dependent on your ping. If you had a slow ping, you would build slower than your opponent and they would get a HUGE jump on you in development. Stupid dial-up modems....

its the time it takes to send a bit of data from you to the server and back again.

I honestly have a problem once I get to around 100 ping or so, especially in fast-paced games. There's no way you can maintain accuracy and precision at such a rate.

A ping rate is command delay in miliseconds, so one ping is 1/1000th of a second. 500ping is half a second, and yada yada.

The thing is, whenever you do something on an online game it takes time for it to get to the server than to the players. Your ping rate is the time it takes for your activity to hit the server. So if you shoot someone, and your ping rate is 500, it will take half a second for that other person to realize they've been shot, and in that time they could have moved 3 feet. However, that kill will still be counted as the server recognized the bullet hitting the hitbox correctly, leading to people blaming lag.

Depends.

Roleplaying Games (like MMOs and Neverwinter Nights online, Diablo 2 and so on) - 250+ is mediocre.

Shooters and RTS games? Under 150.

Depends on the game.

Counter Strike, Unreal, Quake and Dod:s are unplayable above 120.

Battlefield/2, L4D and TF2 are fine up to 200ish

Swat 4 can have every player on 600 and still play perfectly. Probably due to the slow movement speeds and (extremely) unforgiving bullet damage.

if I have the gall to play games on my PC online, then I get a ping just over 200... and that's a LOW number compared to a server with more than four people on it.

Depends on the game. In CoD4. anything below 120 is acceptable. ideally i look for 60-80 though.

In BF2 or BF2142 though, the ideal ping is 100. not less, not more. If you have to choose one, less is better than more. But 100 is still the best. because the server averages movement for 100 ping. If youre at 100 ping when you shoot at someone you dont have to lead or follow them to hit them w/ bullets.

yes BF2/2142 has horrible netcode. DICE really really needs to fix that on the next one.
