so i have a copy of Final Fantasy 7, which i recently started playing. problem is, the copy i have is 12 years old, well 12 years ago i was 7 years old. in a time where i believed taking care of cds was everything. needless to say there are several scratches and other marks all over the ps1 cd that prevent me from playing the game all at once without the game freezing at some point, causing me to shut off the system and reload, hoping it doesnt keep freezing.

so here's the problem. should i buy a new copy of FF7 (when i say new, i mean a replacement, i doubt i could get a "new" copy of the game anymore) with the potential of having just as many scratches on it as my current copy has, which would also mean its probably from a 3rd party which means i wouldnt be buying it from squaresoft (currently square enix) anyway, or should i just ask my friend for his ps1 emulator and find a rom for ff7, which would technically "piracy"?

once again i would like to point out that i already have, in my possession, a legitimate copy of FF7 which i legitimately bought from squaresoft 12 years ago.

what does the escapist think?

I believe that if you bought the game you can pirate it. You already paid for it, so you shouldn't feel bad about pirating it.

You CAN get a legal copy off of the play station store on PSN.

Just torrent it. No need to start a thread on such a simple subject.

And roms work like this:
If you have the game in your possession, it is legal, because you already paid for it.

I think...you can download it.
Or contact Square, I've heard of some people contacting game companies asking to have their disks replaced and it working.
The thing about downloading it is that this sort of falls in the legal grey area. Since you legally purchased it, I would say go for it. But in general I frown upon video game piracy.
EDIT:

Oh that's right! What he said, just go buy it on PSN.

If you have a PS3 buy it off the marketplace or whatever it's called. If worse comes to worst use an emulator. Old disc copies of FF7 are really expensive now as they're a collector's item, and as you said, you risk the chance that the disc is scratched.

Try PSN and get the legal copy. If not, then buy a CD claner and use that. It's worked wonders for my old PS1 games in the past. Only then, if that doesn't work, should you consider pirating it. Since you own a legitimate copy then there shouldn't be any problem with pirating it. However, even so, only do that as a very last resort, just in case.

Actually, you're alright on this one. You can have the ROM if you own a copy of the game without any kind of punishment. It's part of the new Intellectual Property laws, where you can back up your physical copies of movies, music, games, etc, by digital means.

Go for the ROM, but keep the discs.

Aye. This is pretty much correct.

How it helps to have backup...One has to know these things in the modern age if one intends to utilize more software than is probably healthy.

I'm against most forms of piracy, but that sounds like one of the rare occasions where it would be ok (technically more of a replacement; I have issues with those who don't buy in the first place).

Well your poll is silly.

It doesn't have a option saying "Yes Pirate it" and if it's there then it's in hiding.

So I'll just verbalise it.

PIRATE IT Join me pirate crew!

Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!

Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is all right to be!
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!

You are a pirate! (Yay!)

We got us a map (a map!) to lead us to a hidden box,
Thats all locked up with locks (with locks!) and buried deep away.
We'll dig up the box (the box!), we know it's full of precious booty
Burst open the locks, and then we'll say 'HOORAY!'

Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee,
If you love to sail the sea, you are a pirate!

WEIGH ANCHOR!

Yah - har - fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is all right to be!
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
Arr - yarr - ahoy and avast, dig in the dirt and you dig in it fast!
Hang the black flag at the end of the mast! You are a pirate!

HA HA HA (Yay!)

We're sailing away (set sail!), adventure waits on every shore!
We set sail and explore (ya-har!) and run and jump all day (Yay!)
We float on our boat (our boat!) until its time to drop the anchor,
Then hang up our coats (aye-aye!) until we sail again!

Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee,
If you love to sail the sea you are a pirate!

LAND HO!

Yar - har - fiddle-dee-dee, being a pirate is alright with me!
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
Yar har wind at your back lads, wherever you go!
Blue sky above and blue ocean below, you are a pirate!

HA HA HA!
You are a pirate!

Torrenting a copy is not considered a "legal backup" its considered Piracy, pure and simple... any morality you place on it to convince yourself otherwise to make it acceptable, simply does not hold up in court, especially in this day and age of Piracy witch hunts.

Well, I know with Music you can create copies of the real thing, as long as you have a paid music sheet for each one.. and your not using both.

What? I'm pretty sure you can torrent things you already bought legally. Assuming you still have the disc or receipt, of course.

Usually I am against piracy is wrong, but I am open minded, am I not?
Try and see if it persists, I wouldn't spend money on a scratch remover, but try it if you have one. Finally, if all else fails, I would pardon your piracy as you bought the game.
