I must admit that I pirated one game, and I loved it to death. I wish I'd paid for it. Plus I was too afraid the company would find out I stole it if I used the online content, so I didn't quite get the full experience. When I get some money I will probably buy it.
As for music, most of my library is pirated. But most of it was my sister, who owned the computer before me, and a good chunk of what I downloaded I probably wouldn't buy if I went to the store and listened to it first.

As for overpriced things, well, I'd have to say pirating them is fair. I would never have saved up enough money to buy Flash, which is like $400 even with the discount I could get. Plus I'm really quite good at it and plan to give to the flash community. I even bought a book on how to program on it from Adobe.

Pirating in general is not nearly as bad as stealing physical objects imo. Plus, it's a lot easier to get caught.

On the other hand, I plan on being a programmer, and I wouldn't want anyone to pirate one of my products, but whatever, it's inevitable.

For most people this is true, but take me for example. I have an Intel Dual Core Processor 2.4, 2GB of RAM...but only a 128MB video card. Most games run fine despite the low video card (Assassin's Creed, Dragon Age, Spider-Man 3 and Arkham Asylum run pretty well on Medium settings) but I can't be positive. I know for a fact GTAIV doesn't work because I pirated it first to test it. If I hadn't I would have wasted $50. (And no, I can't upgrade because I'm on a Mac)

Ahoy matey! How do you feel about pirating? I have done it some, but I am trying to stop in fear of getting caught. Do you think it is wrong to illegally download things, or do you think it is wrong that companies that sell games/ music/ movies have really high prices for some products?
How ironic, you joined two days ago. This seems to be a pattern with people who make conspicuous threads like this.

I haven't pirated stuff in years.

iTunes makes it just as easy to get the music I want, and it is free.

That said, it isn't like I think people who pirate are bad. The music and enteraintment industries created this problem themselves by failing to adapt and out-and-out greed.

You are possibly right...but if the people saying they pirated stuff's profiles are their actual information....they're retarded...i've almost made it impossible to find out my real name on the internet =P

Me personally? Video games, movies, music. I'm a bastard but I'm not going to hide behind any lie or pretend what I'm doing is right. I know it's wrong and against the law, but so is the speed I do in my car down the freeway and I'm not going to pretend I have a right to speed, nor did I have a right to drink alcohol underage. Yes I break the law and I'm not going to sugar coat it and neither should anybody else, if they can't deal with the reality of it they shouldn't do it and the world will benefit.
There was a similar thread a few days ago, and this was pretty much my response. My compliments for your superior opinion, good sir.

On a somewhat related note, I'm not dishing out a penny towards large record companies, after they managed to make fan made guitar tabs illegal. If I pen down the riffs to Mastodon's Blood and Thunder, so that my mate can learn it on his guitar, one of us, maybe even both of us, have just commited a crime. Apparently, he should've bought the sheet music from WB.

I read somewhere that Pirating music actually bosts sales, because you won't buy a C.D. for one or two songs, but you'd download it. And if someone liked it, they'd go and buy it. I've ended up buying quite a few albums that way.

Well there's your bloody problem! You're on a freakin' Mac! Any attempt at PC gaming on that platform is going to be hit-or-miss at best, so rather than engage in piracy, try buying a PC if you want to play PC games!

You wouldn't play XBox 360 games on a PS3, would you?

If companies wouldn't charge such an OBSCENE amount for music, and would actually let you OWN said purchases (DRMs are devil spawn) then I would not pirate. But when you consider that a song costs a WHOLE DOLLAR (OK 99 cents..) or you can subscribe for unlimited downloads but not actually OWN the music, pirating is the way to go, seriously it shouldn't cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars to fill up an iPod.

Yes, but are you logged into your profile on a proxy server? If you're not, your IP can be easily traced as long as you're online.

1. I don't have the money for a PC. And since the only current console I have is a Wii, Installing Windows through Bootcamp seemed the best way to go.

2. Like I said, most games I've tried work perfectly fine, having one or two games not work isn't a big deal.

3. (This is also in response to LordNue) The entire reason I downloaded GTAIV was to sample it and make sure it worked properly before I bought it. It would have defeated the point if I didn't buy it.

Yeah, pirating stuff. Worst thing about it is people who try to justify it. Face it, you're commiting a crime. Stealing namely, no matter how you may 'prove' otherwise. You're doing it because
a) you're greedy - it's not extraordinarily cheap, yes, but people work for that shit hard
b) it doesn't feel like a crime - you're alone, nobody's watching you, so there's a psychological bonus, just like with e.g. fast driving
c) it's easy as shit
edit:
d) as the person above me stated: "everyone does it, right? why not me?"

If you have to download your shit, do it, but I presume 80% of the stuff you own is not worth your time anyways. Do like me (I'm not rich myself), focus on the really good stuff and use your brains, don't get suckered in. Video stores are your best friends. Fuckers.

Pirating is wrong in every way possible and every single argument piraters use are flimsy.

You say that you're "making a point" to the company.
Yup. You make the point that their product is in fact popular and "wantable", but they just haven't worked enough on their DRM. You don't get to go to them and explain your reason for pirating. They just see that you pirated it, and don't know anything about your motivations. The guy at the board meeting who suggests "Maybe they're pirating because it's overpriced" will have no evidence to give and will be thrown out.

You say that it's not so bad because you're not a part of the target audience.
By pirating it, you're proving that you are. Would you pirate Dora the Explorer: Adventures in the Arctic with SingAlong? No? Probably because you'd never pay for it, and show absolutely no interest. Would you pirate Tomb Raider? Maybe? Because you'd never buy it anyway. But if that game has a value of $0 to you, why do you want it? It obviously has value to you, even if it's a far less value than the price assigned.

The demo doesn't show enough, and I'll buy it if I feel the devs deserve it.
If this is a problem for you, you can rent the game or just leave it, letting the developers know you don't want to buy a game until you've seen a bit of it in action. If the demo was a lot of fun, that's probably indicative of the rest of the game. If it wasn't so fun, or left you wanting more, that's also indicative. So don't buy.

Let me cap off saying piracy is massively hurting the PC gaming market, and drives up prices and DRM for other markets like music. Think through the consequences of stealing the game you "don't actually want."

This is the only part I don't agree with. With some games you literally are not part of the people they want to sell games to. Japanese exclusives mainly. My primary example being Mother 3. The Mother series has a massive fanbase in both Japan and everywhere else. You may remember Earthbound. That was Mother 2. Well when Mother 3 came, the great Japanese overlords decided to not show mercy on the world and decided to not share their wares with us. They refused to sell their product in our market. I didn't know about Mother 3 when it came out either. I didn't know until years later when it wasn't for sale any more. Not only was it only in Japanese for use only with a Japanese GBA, I couldn't even import it through normal standards. Not to mention the entire Mother series was dropped from the map. They literally can not sell it to us again due to the fact that the people who made will be sued repetitively for outdated pop-culture references if they did. Getting a legal copy of that game is very near to impossible for me and very much impossible for me to understand without patching it, which is in itself considered illegal. I would love to buy an English copy of the entire Mother series. I love those games. The people in charge of the games just never loved me.

ILLEGALLY mooching off some poor companies hard labour because you're too cheap to just go buy it? I think it's awful!
