Didn't scientist also say that there was going to be an ice age in the 70's and say that there is global warming now? And, shortly after they said Pluto wasn't a planet, they declared some big ball of gas in another solar system a planet... Oh, and how could I forget... scientist did all these tests on bumble bees, looking at the size of their wings, their body eight, and everything... And they came to the conclusion that it is physically impossible for bumble bees to fly...vivaldiscool said:If the scientists say it's not a planet, then it's not a planet. and in 60 years time when they reclassify it as a heebyjeeby, they will say we dont know as much as they will. Just saying, dont take everything scientists say as gospel (a nice wee comment that should annoy both spiritualists and aetheists (Y))Cargando said:NVM, but we didn't know as much then as we do know. Obviously, if we did know as much as we do know now, then they wouldn't have classified it as a planet.kaziard said:im sorry i should have been more clear, the round world thing was a third seperate argument, it should have been:Cargando said:Actually people have believed the Earth is round since before Columbus, it's an extremely common mistake.kaziard said:they also said man cant fly, the victorians had discovered everything possible and the world is round (which it clearly isnt)vivaldiscool said:If the scientists say it's not a planet, then it's not a planet. they also said man cant fly, the victorians had discovered everything possible and, finally, the world is round
Emphasis on valid. I don't see that as a good enough reason. Surely if it was big enough for them to call it a planet in the first place then saying it's too small now is a bit strange....Cargando said:Too small. There, that wasn't so hard?Geek@Heart said:Um yeah, sure I do. Maybe I should read the other posts on here, but I don't know of any valid reason why it wouldn't be a planet.
To be fair, with the bees you've picked an annoying one there. As to the the gas-planet, what did you think Saturn and Jupiter were? Global Warming is happening, and the bloke who predicted the 70's ice age was one of those Doomsday nutjobs.Assassin Xaero said:Didn't scientist also say that there was going to be an ice age in the 70's and say that there is global warming now? We didn't know better then, that's like calling someone a bad artist by the paintings they did in nursery.Geek@Heart said:Emphasis on valid. I don't see that as a good enough reason. As Good as it is to have a questioning mind, there comes a time when you have to realize that such things must be questioned for logical fallices, not what suites your fancy. This is quite obviously an entirely different case than the afformentioned examples. For one, This isn't an example of discovery or prediction, it's a simple matter of reclassification. Is it valuable? Yes. But it can't be "wrong" per-se since they only changed the faulty paremeters of what makes a planet, rather than what pluto was thought to be.kaziard said:they also said man cant fly, the victorians had discovered everything possible and the world is round (which it clearly isnt)vivaldiscool said:If the scientists say it's not a planet, then it's not a planet. Always? You mean, like before it was discovered?Avykins said:Of course it is a planet. It always has been. I do not care if some dumbass "scientists" decide to waste time and say it is not. Always has been, always will be.
Dwarf planets do not count as planets. You might count some big moons as planets, but it doesn't make them so.Rebelhobnob said:I said yes, because it's called a dwarf "planet".
I realise that, it's just that I'm arguing against people calling it a planet just because it's more convenient.vivaldiscool said:Assassin Xaero said:Didn't scientist also say that there was going to be an ice age in the 70's and say that there is global warming now? For another. Do I really have to spell out how stupid it is to say "They could say it's wrong in the future, so I'm going to stick with what they know is wrong now."?
