Poll: Pokemon #124 - Jynx: Racist Stereotype?

OK, so before I say what I want to say here, I want to clear up something: don't post "Search bar" or anything along those lines. I have searched, and what I found was not exactly what I was looking for (I found Jynx and racism, but her Japanese name). Anyway...

So I just read an article about Jynx (from Pokemon) being a racist stereotype. This idea is not a new concept to me, but I received an email from the ECA today, and I thought I'd read a few of the articles they featured.

People have apparently drawn conclusions about Jynx's name as well as her "blackface" appearance; saying that it's connected to voodoo and stuff. But what I haven't seen yet is a connection between her Japanese name and a racist stereotype.

I just found out that "Rougela" is her Japanese name and Googled it not thinking about what might come up in the search... "Baton Rouge, LA." With an emphasis on "Rouge, LA."

Louisiana is frequently referred to as a home of African American culture, and I don't completely buy Bulbapedia's excuse that "Rougela" is a reference to the rouge makeup women wear. Jynx doesn't wear rouge and her dress is the only thing red about her.

So here's my topic of conversation: What does everyone think of Jynx's Japanese name? Is it a reference to Baton Rouge, LA? Is Jynx intentionally racist, or is she based on the Norse goddess Hel? Maybe some composite of stereotypes and legends?

[edit] I just realized that I hadn't posted how I feel about the situation. I honestly don't think that Jynx was created purely with racist stereotypes in mind. Having read about Hel (the Norse goddess) and seeing the "Holiday Hi-Jynx" episode when when it first aired a decade ago, I feel that Jynx is probably some sort of composition of things: reference to legend and stereotype. I do not know how I feel about her Japanese name; it's just a shallow connection I drew only just tonight.

Methings you might be searching for something that's not there. If it is there, it's long gone and no one knows/cares.

Interesting coincidence, though.

This is the first time in my life that the thought of Jynx having anything to do with racist has crossed my mind.

Probably not, though racism is pretty big over there[footnote]citation needed[/footnote]...

A better question is this: Was Mr. Popo more racist before or after being blue?

I always thought Jynx was just supposed to be, uh... whatever the hell it's supposed to be.
I never noticed anything racist about it until the politically correct council pointed it out.

Though I do buy that its japanese name is a reference to the makeup.

That bright blue gives me a headache.
And I thought he was Indian?

I never considered him anything other than Mr. Popo. Still, this edit - and it aired on actual TV by the way - isn't even good. It's more like he's highlighted than anything.

Apparently, Japan views black face differently than we do, so while that may be an accepted cultural norm there, or even just a small following, when it crosses over here, we (based our differing cultural values due to our history) interpret it as racist.

Even if Jynx WAS a racist insertion into the franchise, they retconned some purple onto it and fixed muchof the problem. And here I was hoping I could keep my involvement with Jynx-related matters to a minimum (I have always disliked it).

Same here. More or less, still thought he was an Indian... whatever the hell he is. Still, he could have been anything, really. There's all kinds of animals walking around in the DBZ universe, not to mention all the aliens.

Yeah, somehow I doubt the Japanese naming team decided to make a reference to an American city, a reference that would probably go over the heads of most Japanese players. As for the character model, it's about as racist as Popo. I don't think Jynx is supposed to be human, so much as roughly humanoid.

Isn't Jynx supposed to be a Japanese subculture reference? Ganguro, or manba or something? Weirdly enough, ganguro is actually based off blackface, Japan has a weird view of black people. Soo.. it's kind of indirectly, not on purposely racist.

Don't look directly into it.

They've proven that to be incorrect supposedly. Ganguro arose just as the 1st Pokemon games were coming out in Japan in 1995, and development started years before that.

Self-appointed leaders of the African-American community who believe they speak on behalf of said community seem to think so. And they are the loudest voices in the room, so they must be right. Granted they also believe singularities to be racist.

I never thought it was (although I suppose you could see the "blackface-thing", but even still it's not racist unless you want to see it that way).

Really creepy, though.
