I don't know about you, but I love Poke'mon. It's a part of my childhood, and even at the age of 20, I still enjoy playing them.

So, I got to the idea of a Poke'mon game on a proper console, and how that would work. My idea: a Poke'mon game in 3D, whereby the camera looks behind the character in a 3rd person view, and you can actually see the Poke'mon running around you as you travel the world. Think, similar to Final Fantasy XII.

The gameboy games (and now DS) are portable, and are quite small compared to other games on console, so the world would have to be quite a bit larger. You start off in good ol' Pallet town, move up to Viridian, continue through Kanto until you get to the Poke'mon League. After that, Johto opens up, and you can either continue with your current Poke'mon, or dropping a few and catching new ones to add to your party. After finishing Johto, there is a new Poke'mon League, and Mt. Silver opens up. Or the Orange Islands. Or something else.

I think, with only Johto and Kanto, the game would be a bit small. In the gameboy games, you can travel to a new city in about 2 minutes (without battles). The length between towns would have to be significantly larger, so it feels more like a journey or trek. Can you imagine fighting your way through Mt. Moon, never knowing how far away from the exit you are? I think it would bring a certain 'grandness' to the franchise.

When walking around, Poke'mon can attack you, and you can die (or faint). If one attacks you, you don't simply press 'run'. You actually have to run away, and hope they don't follow. Or, alternatively, you could battle with your own Poke'mon.

Battling with Poke'mon is the biggest issue I can think of. Do they simply stand there, popping off at each other while you select attacks from a menu? Sounds a little dull to me. I think it would be better if, when you send out a Poke'mon, the player's control moves from the trainer to the Poke'mon, and you can run around, attack, run around again, dodge, etc. But, how would this work? A button assigned to each attack? e.g. on Playstation, x for thundershock, square for quick attack, etc. Or, would a mini menu be better? e.g. press Triangle to pop open a little menu as you're running, select the attack, and then wait for it to charge up again, similar to an ATB.

Or maybe have both in the game, and allow the player to choose which system he or she'd like to use.

The other issue I think of is which console it would be on. The Wii is an obvious choice, as it's Nintendo. But, I'm not sure it would have the capability to play such a large game. Would it be released on Playstation or XBox? I'm not sure.

I've been thinking of this idea for a while, and, personally, I think it would be great. I know I'd definitely play it.

Anyway, what do you think? Would you play it? Would you buy it? What issues do you think would arise, and how would you go about fixing it? Should we start lobbying Nintendo for such a game right this minute? Or, do you think it's just a stupid idea and it will never work?

EDIT: I hear they did something similar on XD and Coliseum. I've never played these games, or seen them. So, apologies for that. Still, the same question stands.

They made that. Twice. Pokemon Colosseum and XD, and they both sucked because they were by different developers. So I want to see a 3D console one actually made by Game Freak.

EDIT: Except that battle system, which was in a DS spinoff.

I have personally loved the idea of a massive 3d pokemon game for years, while the current 2d ones are good, ive always liked the second gen the best and a large part of that is the size of the game.

And with current gen graphics, i think it could be done well, heck even if it was just a larger 3d version of the 2d games out at the minute id probably buy it.
As for battling, the pokemon colosseum games seemed to have a good idea there.

The biggest issue i can see cropping up is that animating that many moves and pokemon in 3d would take forever and probably place limits on what they could do as itd be on a wii, but the wii u, while wierdly named, is a heck of a lot more powerful, so maybe its something thay could think about making for that?

I've wanted this for years. I think what would work best with a 3D Pokemon world is an instanced battle system, I forget the actual name. Similar to Final Fantasy XIII where you can see the monsters in the real world, but get transported to various sized battlefields to do the actual fighting. Whether that would work best with free running, or fixed battle positions, I'm not sure.

To add diversity, perhaps battles could be color coded into more specifics. For example, some battles might have fixed positions on a small/medium sized arena, with a drop down menu to select attacks, similar to turn based games. While others could be in larger arenas, where you actually control the individual/team Pokemon; moving/jumping/attacking.

I could think of a tonne of mini games that would work great in a 3D world; pokemon racing, survival mode, platforming, tag, CTF, TDM, etc.

I think if they did this they'd do each generation individually to milk the most money out of it, but one with all generations would be amazing.

EDIT: For attacks, I think what would work best is have either one or two buttons that execute said attacks. Than use the D-pad as a hotkey, like in Oblivion. That's 8 possible attacks, not including switching out attacks from the ones you have earned. I think one button for melee, one for elemental/magic attacks. Another button could determine what the D-pad hotkeys switch. Whether it's assigned to melee switching or elemental switching.

As for animating said moves/attacks, they have already done so on the 3DS Pokedex. Albeit it's only one move each Pokemon, and it's quite limited, this shows it's quite possible on the 3DS.

I want a pokemon MMO . Imagine all pokemon games into one massively huge mmo ( the elite 4 will be lvl 50 and 100 for mid game and end game). Keep the base stats that currently exist , remOve the legendaries from pvp . And have people duke it out from lvl 1-100 . Theres what? 5 generations? Red/blue ( level 1-20 ) gold/silver ( level 20-40 ) ruby and sapphire ( level 40-60 ) diamond and pearl ( level 60-80) black and white ( levels 80-100). You could add end game content for levels 100. You would be able to level any pokemon you want to 100 , from all 500+ pokemon. Have online ranking and everything . I think it could work if they stay true to pokemon and don't take the WoW route and give certain pokemon and unfair advantage over others for no reason.

Go play some MegaTen games.
:p

But, seriously, yeah...I'd like that.

Maybe go back to the 151 routes.

Mystery Dungeon 2 was the good one of the the spinoffs I believe you are referencing.

Also, OP for future reference, I fucking love Pokemon but in the future just type Pokemon. It makes it easier on your part you know?

As for the idea, its been attempted and they really didn't succeed very well, in the same essence that Phlakes stated.

I had thought about a very similar idea quite a while back. With todays tech, the things that could be done with the franchise could be really good. It really is a shame that nintendo hasn't capitalised on the possibilities. Personally I would like to see a game much like you described but with some more rpg thrown in. I suppose we'll just have to hope.

XD and Coliseum were nothing like what your describing. They were essentially just a string of battles with an overworld. There was no exploring, or training beyond the most superficial sense. Replace the pokemon sprites with generic monsters and it would be nearly totally unidentifiable as a pokemon game.

I've always thought Nintendo needed to make a Pokemon MMO.
