I don't know about you, but I love Poke'mon. It's a part of my childhood, and even at the age of 20, I still enjoy playing them.
So, I got to the idea of a Poke'mon game on a proper console, and how that would work. My idea: a Poke'mon game in 3D, whereby the camera looks behind the character in a 3rd person view, and you can actually see the Poke'mon running around you as you travel the world. Think, similar to Final Fantasy XII.
The gameboy games (and now DS) are portable, and are quite small compared to other games on console, so the world would have to be quite a bit larger. You start off in good ol' Pallet town, move up to Viridian, continue through Kanto until you get to the Poke'mon League. After that, Johto opens up, and you can either continue with your current Poke'mon, or dropping a few and catching new ones to add to your party. After finishing Johto, there is a new Poke'mon League, and Mt. Silver opens up. Or the Orange Islands. Or something else.
I think, with only Johto and Kanto, the game would be a bit small. In the gameboy games, you can travel to a new city in about 2 minutes (without battles). The length between towns would have to be significantly larger, so it feels more like a journey or trek. Can you imagine fighting your way through Mt. Moon, never knowing how far away from the exit you are? I think it would bring a certain 'grandness' to the franchise.
When walking around, Poke'mon can attack you, and you can die (or faint). If one attacks you, you don't simply press 'run'. You actually have to run away, and hope they don't follow. Or, alternatively, you could battle with your own Poke'mon.
Battling with Poke'mon is the biggest issue I can think of. Do they simply stand there, popping off at each other while you select attacks from a menu? Sounds a little dull to me. I think it would be better if, when you send out a Poke'mon, the player's control moves from the trainer to the Poke'mon, and you can run around, attack, run around again, dodge, etc. But, how would this work? A button assigned to each attack? e.g. on Playstation, x for thundershock, square for quick attack, etc. Or, would a mini menu be better? e.g. press Triangle to pop open a little menu as you're running, select the attack, and then wait for it to charge up again, similar to an ATB.
Or maybe have both in the game, and allow the player to choose which system he or she'd like to use.
The other issue I think of is which console it would be on. The Wii is an obvious choice, as it's Nintendo. But, I'm not sure it would have the capability to play such a large game. Would it be released on Playstation or XBox? I'm not sure.
I've been thinking of this idea for a while, and, personally, I think it would be great. I know I'd definitely play it.
Anyway, what do you think? Would you play it? Would you buy it? What issues do you think would arise, and how would you go about fixing it? Should we start lobbying Nintendo for such a game right this minute? Or, do you think it's just a stupid idea and it will never work?
EDIT: I hear they did something similar on XD and Coliseum. I've never played these games, or seen them. So, apologies for that. Still, the same question stands.
