Do you think that the pokemon tv series would have been successful without the games? I personally don't, and i also think if the first pokemon games had been diamond/pearl released now, it wouldn't have been as successful, as red/blue were revolutionary at the time as it introduced or made popular a lot of game mechanics still used in games today.

The first two sets of Pokemon were awesome but now they just keep on adding new pokemon so that there are 1000000 pokemon to find and catch.

I just couldn't be bothered to follow them after they got past gold and silver.

Key word there being now.

Anyway, back on the topic:
In short: no.
In long: nooooo- No! Bad motti!

Seriously now, the show was essentially a fanservice, and probably wouldn't have taken off.

I couldn't agree more, some people just watched it to say "hey look, I've got that one on the game."

It might have, although I doubt it'd have been successful in the U.S. or here in Blighty.

Still, if the anime had took off, it'd have begotten tons of tie in junk, which would have resulted in games that would have been sub-standard compared to the Pokemon games that exist nowadays (main series-wise) as they'd have just tied in with the show, rather than the other way around.

...Well, I believe that no, the series would have failed, if not for the games. Nowadays though the anime sucks, because there is like a hyperbillilion of them damn pookeymon.

It'd possible that it would have still been popular, perhaps with some of the same people who also enjoyed Digimon, but it might not have been as popular as it is today.

Though the original games, Red and Blue, were by far the best.
The newer installments don't add enough to make it terribly better than the originals, and the fact that you can only catch the previous line of pokemon by completing certain things (pokedex or defeating the elite four) just makes the game boring.

Personally, I think a more mature version of pokemon might actually be somewhat interesting.
Almost like Jurassic Park meets Baldur's Gate or Never Winter Knights, accept the people in your party would be replaced by vicious fighting beasts.
If anything else, the thought makes my demented little brain squirm with glee.

And i agree that more pokemon is not a good thing and the new ones suck, the gold and silver days were the best!

The last worthwhile games were FireRed and LeafGreen. The whole 3D graphics thing of the DS was off-putting. Pokemon's graphics are about grid-based not-to-scale sprites.

I'm gonna have to say 'yes' because the pokemon cards were incredibly popular for 3 years or so and I used to love 'em. My friends used to spend their hard earned money to by heaps of packets with 8 colourful cards in hopes to find a holo.

I loved the games as well up to gold and silver as alot of people at my old school but they passed quickly when we beat the elite 4 which wasn't very hard to do.

Unfortunately, yes. The tv series are what made the games a succes in the first place, even though, looking bad at it, it's one of the most stupid and ridiculous animes I've ever seen. Okay, I haven't seen that many animes, but it's still pretty dumb as opposed to the pretty good games.

The first few seasons of Pokemon were what started the franchise, since then the games have been carrying it in my opinion. The anime after Brock left turned to crap.

kids watch all sorts of bad anim, so it would have had it's following, but it wouldn't have done anywhere near as good as it did with the games.

I'd really like to see the games improve a bit, though : \

most likely no. the games got the interest flowing so the show was a hit. had they used the show to get the interest flowing so the game was a hit, people would probably have played the game, then watched the show. if the games were taken out all together it must likely would have been a bust. i lost interest when the second generation came out. now there are 496-odd with, i've heard, a new generation in the works. ENOUGH'S ENOUGH!

I watched and loved the horrendous tv program long before getting the game. It's still a massive nostalgia bomb.

I think if Diamond and Pearl were the first Pokemon games to be released (assuming someone hadn't beat them to it) then people would absolutely be shitting themselves. I mean, over 400 distinct creatures and incredibly polished for-all-ages gameplay? You gotta admit, Pokemon offers a pretty robust pacakge.

As for the anime, I can't get past the fact that Team Rocket still hogs about ten minutes an episode. At first it was cute, but now it's just like "Hey! We can't write 22 minutes of plot! Giant robot time!"

The anime and movies are essentially just advertisements for the videogames. However, I've heard that the Pokemon Special manga isn't nearly as much as the animations...
