I was reading a thread related to the new District 9 movie that comes out soon. The thread was about whether or not non-humans deserve human rights. More than half say "no" that we should not extent our humanitarian rights towards beings from another world. Basically to not treat them fairly.

And this made me think. With this train of thought, according to more than half the poll results, are we ready for contact with extra terrestrial lifeforms?

I know some people are, but if aliens do visit us I can bet you that Jack Thompson will find some way of blaming it on video games and Uwe Boll would want to make a movie of it. I'll stick with "maybe"

Have you ever seen the movie "Mars Attacks"? Because of that movie I say no. Of course if the aliens were not evil humans could maybe have a chance. Maybe.

I've often thought human beings have gotten not only comfortable but professional efficiency in killing one another it would appear to me any intelligent life with optics on our little ball of blue they would feel shock and fear and opt to best to stay the fuck away, as to avoid any possible hostile contact.

Even though it is only a movie: "The Day The Earth Stood Still" is a good example of how humanity would act. By humanity, I mean the U.S. Government and the young boy (Jacon?). Disregarding the fact that Klaatu and his race were there to "exterminate" us, because in the beginning the intentions were unknown.

I think if the aliens prove that they are intelligent then people will see it differently
Do you not think that the fact they could come up with the necessary technology to visit us would be proof enough?

I sincerely hope, for your sake, you're talking about the original and not that god-awful remake. Keanu Reeves destroyed Klaatu, and their reasoning for the destruction of the human race was so bloody STUPID.

Does any one else remember the South Park episode in which such a question is presented. Low down for anyone not seen it (Spoiler) Stand's dad steals this experimental super magnet for Down hill derby causes thing to go into warp speed gets aliens attention. And to shorten things up Stan end up shanking the alien ambassador in the throat, rest of humanity tries to keep i forget was it millions or billions of "space bucks", intergalactic police pull ambassador out and they seal off earth from the rest of the universe as we are an unfit and violent species. Yeah it's kinda like that...

No. Unless they decide we are worthy of extermination, any alien species with the technology to reach us would be smart enough to see we arent worth their time of day.

Despite how we wank ourselves off in science fiction, were really a pathetic and savage race. Hardly the wonderous beings, as warm and fuzzy as it may make you feel, that sci-fi would often make us out to be. Or the centre of the fucking universe, as religion would tell you.

Nope. We are far from ready, and considering our militaristic and xenophobic tendencies (not to mention our extreme paranoia when it comes to extra-terrestrials), I don't think we ever will be. I hope very much that we do not encounter another intelligent life-form until we are a bit more unified and less violent as a species.

I'm confident in our violent nature to be able to effectively kill anything that comes our way. To hell with them if they don't think us "worthy." Fifty years of developing nukes, tells me I don't give a shit about what aliens think.

well, quite frankly, if an extra terrestrial life is able to contact us, then they will have proven themselves to be far more intelligent then us.

the reason generally given for not allowing animals human rights is a lack of sentience, so if they can contact us we would be unlikely to discriminate against them at least until we advanced further.

that said, i think it would be more likely that we would have to be given alien rights. if the aliens in question are feeling nice anyway.

They'll probably take one look at earth, say 'lol' in an alien tongue, and go back to their home planet.

I really doubt we'd have to worry about giving them rights. Dick Cheny and Kim Jong-Il would probably bomb the hell out of them before they touched down. So no, I don't think we're ready.
