I do it all the time unintentionally.

I usually do it to collect money to buy the coolest and newest items, experience points are just a bonus.

In RPG's, it's great to watch your character slowly grow and mop the floor with your previous tormentors.

But in action games, it can get boring very quickly. Mainly because with most of these games, the skill challange is what provides the entertainment.

Dawn of War:Soul Storm. My Honour Guard and Commander were so powerful that I could just walk them into the enemy base and win.

Depends. At first, I like the challenge, so won't over-power myself. But then I want to see how broken I can make my character/party, and then, watchout. My most overpowered to this day remains my monk from Baldur's Gate 2. Huge stat bonuses, better armoured than most dragons (no actual armor needed), insane damage output, both by having more attacks/round than any other character and doing more damage/hit than even the dedicated warriors (no weapon needed), the saves needed to ignore pretty much any negative effect, being 100% immune to magic, stunning attacks, an instant-kill attack, huge hit-point total with regeneration, and, just to give him a bit of ranged ability, fireballs from the unique "Book of Infintite Spell." My friends didn't believe me when I told them about him, until I showed them him fighting a dragon 1-on-1 and coming out without a scratch.

It's enjoyable to a certain point, but then everything ceases to be a challenge.

For example, my New Vegas character uses exclusively melee weapons and can kill Rangers in 3-5 swings of his Rebar Club, but will usually (almost) die in groups larger than 3 enemies. It's satisfying watching the Bloody Mess Perk kick in when the finishing blow is struct, but he still has an Achilles Heel.

It also cheers me up that he pwns Cazadors considering they are the bane of my gun-totting alt.

Yes, because in City of Heroes I like soloing missions and enemies intended for groups, and the difficulty slider in that game means that as you become more and more powerful you can ramp up the difficulty to ridiculous levels.

Sniff. I've always envied people like you. My sad little Dark/Thermal Corruptor could barely handle normal missions until after his Respec. I was so chuffed that I could handle +1 missions after that. ;-;

Yes in some ways, no in others. It does make the combat a little less challenging, but it really puts you in the role of the unstoppable badass the story calls for.

once your guy has god-powers, then the real fun begins. Just give me notepad, a vanilla copy of a game and a quick internet tutorial and I'll have any character levelling armies with huge waves of fire.

I've got a Fire/Thermal alt and can safely say it's a terrible set for soloing. I'll admit that most of my higher level characters are from the soloing powerhouse archetypes - Scrappers, Brutes and Masterminds - but when I get back into the game I think I'll be spending more time with Corrs, Defenders and the like, at which point my playstyle will no doubt leave me open to some serious beatings until I get the hang of it.

I only like it if the game builds it to be so and the story demands are you are godlike. I usually enjoy being at a disadvantage to be fair (Risen is awesome for this) and still beating things that are stronger than me.
Then again- my Arcane Warrior in DAO was getting to the point of ridiculous near end game on the hardest setting.

There is nothing quite like abusing the hell out of the old fallout games' traits and perks to make an unarmed character that punches people in the groin so hard that their torsos explode.
