Poll: Poll: Overpowered main characters

I thought this was the entire point of an rpg... Levelling your arse up until you can cake walk the next boss.

You are never indestructible in final fantasy games.

Ruby weapon, Emerald weapon, Ozma, Omega weapon, to name but a few

Knights of the round, W-Summon, Mime... rince, repeat... Get ready for a really, really long and tedious cutscene from the summons... Dead... That or use the Vincent glitch and one hit kill it.

I had fun doing this in Lord of the Rings: The Third Age on the PS2. Basically what you had to do was this:

-Equip a low damage weapon or use a passive/defensive/low-damage/non-damaging attack.
-Abuse random encounters.
-Abuse low-mana/resource abilities.
-Keep a close eye on your skill trees and cherry-pick your way through the good abilities to the end of the tree.

Basically, how you gained new skills and abilites was done through a tree; you couldn't advance to the next branch unless you got an ability (or both) from the tier before it. To gain an ability and advance to the next tier, you had to use your current abilites a certain number of times, determined by the skill you were 'researching'. One use of an ability from that tree would go toward the counter.

So essentially, the ability leveling mechanic was to spam your special abilites, as each use counted towards gaining a new ability. My favourite character was Berethor, the main protagonist and leader. By cherry-picking through his swordcraft tree and using the above method, I could have access to his 5 strike attack by mid game, easily. And the beauty of it was, once you'd attained it, you could cherry-pick your way back down the tree and accumulate the other abilities that were worth getting.

Anyway yeah, kicking arse and taking names is fun. Why would I not want to do that?

Yes, because in City of Heroes I like soloing missions and enemies intended for groups, and the difficulty slider in that game means that as you become more and more powerful you can ramp up the difficulty to ridiculous levels.

Sniff. I've always envied people like you. My sad little Dark/Thermal Corruptor could barely handle normal missions until after his Respec. I was so chuffed that I could handle +1 missions after that. ;-;

I've got a Fire/Thermal alt and can safely say it's a terrible set for soloing. I'll admit that most of my higher level characters are from the soloing powerhouse archetypes - Scrappers, Brutes and Masterminds - but when I get back into the game I think I'll be spending more time with Corrs, Defenders and the like, at which point my playstyle will no doubt leave me open to some serious beatings until I get the hang of it.

I'm still on the fence about getting back into it and rolling a Dual Pistols Blasters and rejoining my RP Group. Going Rogue looks pretty damn promising.

In the Fable games, I'd always keep my physique on the first level, just to keep the games challenging...

Lets face it! When you can kill somebody by slapping them theres a problem...

Ahh, I remember in Fable II when the only ability I needed was Fireball. It was so damn easy.

I'm still on the fence about getting back into it and rolling a Dual Pistols Blasters and rejoining my RP Group. Going Rogue looks pretty damn promising.

I recommend it highly. Praetoria looks awesome, the enemy groups are challenging and the story content is the best they've ever done.

If all the planets align and the game is kicking my ass ill go grind tastic and level up my character to the point of demi god. Sometimes ill do this anyway without the planetary alignment, or it will happen by accident. When i was playing earthbound i was always getting attacked by monsters so i leveled up really quickly.

It not possible in some games like ZHP or Disgaea as theres always an absurdly hard boss to kill (Which can be made harder if you wanted to).

Not really, I like a challenge.

If I'm OHKOing every enemy, that's boring as hell.

Which is why I dislike backtracking through older areas in RPGs. There's nothing threatening you.

I usually only do this after I've played the game a couple of times. Then I'll be all, "I wonder how high I can get (X) before (point Y)."

If the game ramps up your abilities in league with the difficulty, no problem arises of the game being too easy compared to how powerful the lead is.

I like having a gradual upgrading system to the point of ultimate badassery, and then have the ability to run through the game again as an indestructible badass

Absolutely. Becoming strong enough to blast through waves of enemies is usually my favorite part of the game. Hell, that was 90% of the appeal of The Force Unleashed for me.

I dunno, I suppose I do, for me overlevelling was really the only way to make Demon's Souls playable, and there is certainly a sense of satisfaction in taking out enemies with incredible ease once you've put in the effort. It's very frustrating to get every upgrade and still be underpowered though : see Brutal Legend.
