Proposition: Half-Life is a rip off of DooM
1. Protagonist: Silent, armour suit.
2. Cause of problem: Teleportation experiment gone wrong
3. Setting: Research labs
4. Problem: Alien monstrosities wandering around and taking over people's bodies for their own purposes.
5. Solution: Travelling to Alien Dimension and killing the big bad.
6. Alien Setting: Geigeresque biotechnology

Well, would you just look at that?

You fools...don't you realise they both start with 'H'. Clearly it's a conspiracy of some sort.

I hope you're trolling, because those were the worst points I've ever seen.
Most of them were like saying "Well, in this game, you can walk... AND YOU CAN IN THIS GAME TOO! Stolen concept!" It's ridiculous. So no, it's not based on Half-Life.

Halo was officially announced as little as a year after half life was released, by that point it was far enough into development to reportedly 'wow' those who saw it. While some late development tweaks may have been made to halo due to influence from half life, it seems ridiculous to accuse bungie of basing their game off of half lie.

I was thinking about bringing that up but realised that I did not want to get that far dragged into this. I honestly think this thread is just here to bait fanboys rather than make any sensical non paint drinking form of a point.

Or: Fifa and Halo.
-Both feature 'teams' of people
-Both feature men
-Aggression features heavily in both
-You can run
-You can jump
-Grenades are spherical(like footballs)
-Rooney looks like an elite.

Why has nobody seen this before?

It is fairly true that the Headcrabs and Flood are similar, (You know, except for all the differences) but there have been dozens of Sci-Fi stories with the same sort of creatures.

Other than that? No. Everything else listed are simply staples of gaming, storytelling and Science Fiction.

I rather like Daverson's comparison to Doom. It's just proof that you can call anything a ripoff of anything.

In fact, they both start with the same three letters, definitely a conspiracy.

OT:Since halo was originally going to be an RTS, no.

Was Halo based on Half-Life? Like, did Bungie sit down and say, "Let's make a Half-Life clone but give our protagonist even less personality?" Absolutely not. That's a stupid idea. Was Halo influenced by Half-Life? Well, obviously. Just like every shooter that came out around 2000-2001.

This reminds of the thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.197800-Did-Mass-Effect-Steal-Its-Story-Outright#6417771] from a while back that claimed Mass Effect plagiarized Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space series because they share a few common science fiction tropes.

Also, Half Life's heacrabs are clearly rip-offs of the facehugger from Alien (while resembling a turkey and making zombies).
I don't remember facehuggers making zombies I remember they making aliens and dying after shooting eggs into your stomach, Headcrabs stay on you and make one zombie.

OT: I see your point but I don't think halo was based on half life. For one Cheif talks and has a helmet while gordon is silent and in a orange suit.

The roman numeral for 7 is VII. Also, the only real similarities are powered armor (something that has been around in video games since 1986, at least), an alien invasion (something that has been in video games since basically forever), and for lack of better terms: Zombies (something that has been around as long as alien invasions). That's relatively not very much to go on, that's like saying Halo/Half-Life was based on the movie Aliens.

Yes, they share similar elements, but that's not enough to say one is based on the other. Most games share similar elements... for example: being primarily about humans.

Halo was based on Marathon, which came out way before Half-Life. It would make more sense to say that Half-Life was based on Marathon, not the other way around.

Still, there really aren't many similarities at all, besides one similar enemy and the power armor.

No, the idea of Aliens invading earth is not an uncommon one. Both games have unoriginal ideas but are popular due to their execution of said ideas which are, despite their unoriginality, quite a solid foundation for a story. Also, the games are set in entirely different times and places. Half-Life takes place around 2000 whereas Halo takes place in and around 2552. Halo also has a considerable amount of gameplay set in space and away from earth such as all of Halo 1(which is spent on the Halo ring), Halo 2 also has considerable time on a Halo ring as well as a space station. The flood and headcrabs both are influenced by the Alien movies, especially the headcrabs who bare an uncanny resemblance to the creatures in the Alien movies. I can't recall their name, unfortunately.
Both games simply show you that nothing is really original as both are based on unoriginal themes and are influenced by many of the same movies. Halo was also announced publicly 1999 and so its release after Half-Life has nothing to do with its originality but I'm sure that Half-Life had an influence on Halo it was likely not very signifigant as both are inhernently similar.

Honestly, I think that those things you wrote down are just coincidences. That said, just about every FPS since 2000 has taken points from Half-Life in some way or another. Also, let it be noted that I love both, genre elitism be damned.

No, this is a ridiculous thread. The only close resemblance is the flood to the headcrabs.

Actually, Valve's guys have said Doom was a big influence to them. Of course, Doom was influenced by movies, those movies were influenced by books/older movies and so on and so on.

Nothing wrong with that.

maybe a little, but it is very hard to find 2 games that dont have similarities (unless if you compared bejeweled to MW2)
1 power armor is popular (see section 8, warhammer, STALKER (the exoskeleton), crysis, etc)
2 alien invasions are also popular (warhammer ish, crysis, etc)
3 friendly NPCs are in dam near every game, one that you command are a bit less common, but still
4 ok, this one has a some merit, but they are not that similary, namly, the flood is more swarm based
5 yea, do i really need to explain this one?

their visual design is different, their setting is different, their story is different

Short Answer: No

Long Answer: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Seriously, what you just listed can be found countless other FPS before and after Half Life, and Half Life took head crabs from Alien.
