When I loaded up Dead Space 2 and selected story mode, I noticed an option in the menu called "previously on Dead Space"

It was a concise narrated 5 minute video that explained everything you need to know from the first game. It consisted mostly of still images with narration, but did a great job of not only bringing new players up to speed, but reminding old players of anything important they may have forgotten from Dead Space 1.

Given that this video was obviously not expensive to produce (still images and narration aren't exactly a bank-breaker) do you think it's a good idea for more sequels to start implementing things like this?

I think it's a great idea, and I think it should become standard in sequels throughout the industry, particularly in series that span multiple console generations, you shouldn't have to go back one or even TWO generations just to understand the story of a game that just came out, while you can probably find what you need online, the developers know exactly what you need to know for the game to make sense, and can deliver it in the most concise and efficient way possible, for very little cost.

My question is this, do you think more sequels should offer a short video that gives you the information you need to know in case you didn't play the first one?

Yes.

But make it so only the main plot is covered.

Give them motivation to play the old ones for stuff about the characters, you know?

I disagree, I think it should be as detailed as possible. Let's face it, I'm playing the sequel without playing the first game, am I really going to want to go back to the first game? I don't have time for that!

Maybe an option, like an "overall general" and a "detailed look" or something.

Does anyone really want to boot up the game and watch 20-30 minutes of cutscenes? No. No, they don't.

It'd be like Okami all over again. Really drains you enthusiasm for a game,

I think Mass Effect 2 could've used one when I played it. Then lo and behold; interactive comic for the PS3!

But yeah, in general I think it would be useful for all game sequels to have an optional synopsis of previous games at the beginning.

Try playing Tekken 6, god there were like 4 hours of cutscenes before you could start playing. A storyline to a fighting game??? Really???

I loved it, to be completely honest. And I do believe that most games could benefit from having something like this. It was a nice change from having to sit there and scratch my head as I tried to remember everything from the first game.

Plus, it's optional. They never said you had to watch it.

Someone tell Hideo Kojima this is a viable option than having Snake question everything.

Sounds like a good addition, although only story heavy sequels would really need one could you imagine a Saints Row 2 version?

Dead space 1 really did everything right from the cool monsters down to the little blue line that told you where to go, its nice to see dead space 2 is doing things right as well. Awesome feature, all games with a worthwhile story should have something like this.

Holy hell how did I miss that??? Can never have too much Dead Space.

It is a good idea. I don't see why not. I mean by the tie you get to the sequel you aren't going to find the game new for 69 bucks anyways so it isn't like the devs are hurting themselves with lost sales. As long as I don't have to sit through it if I don't want to it sounds like a grand idea to me.

This is a really good idea. It was good to see Mass Effect 2 doing it, but Dead Space is even better since the plot is so beautifully convoluted. Cough cough, Metal Gear Solid?
