Poll: Problems With Anime?

Anime is fine, the bat crack crazy weaboos are almost as bad as the bat crack crazy Twilight fans though. Japan is easily in my top five favorite countries, I immensely enjoyed the couple weeks I spent there, the language is almost mathematically precise and easy to learn, and the culture is fascinating. That being said, it's not worth blabbering about every second of the day and everything that comes from Japan is not good. It's no different from any other developed nation.

Oh come on, that was easily one of the most epic moments of all time!

While I do like Anime I do find the people obsessed with it to be annoying (although, being in Scotland I've never seen one) and the mass amounts of angst and blatant fanservice can put me off at times.

Prior to encountering anime 'poperly' per sae I grew up watching the likes of Pokemon, DBZ and Yugioh dubs aswell playing numerous JRPGs including a Tales game, a few from the final fantasy series and pretty much all the Pokemon RPGs to date. So it might of been somthing I may of considered liking at one point.

However I was immediatly put off anime and manga from college onwards after losing a friend to the Hentai and Echii (Is that what it's called?) side. Do I really need to expand from that point?

I tend to be quite picky with anime, as now we can see the entire selection you realise how much shit can exist in an art medium.

When an anime turns me away, it's generally poor animation, plots and voice acting that does it for me.

Makes you sound pedestrian, if I'm honest.
I personally love making fun of poorly drawn hentai and complementing artists when they actually put some effort in and make a good picture, granted it isn't exactly an activity you can do with friends, but... well, it's a way to spend time, I suppose.

I've never come across any weaboos to be honest, but I do dislike 95% of the anime shows released in the last 6 or 5 years.

Probably because they're all targeted toward the teenage demographic.

Personally I like the original version of everything. As a kid, I first saw anime and started to like it, but later on I turned to the original manga, which in my opinion was far superior to the anime in every way. I thought the biggest problems with animes that are based on the manga comic books is that they can never capture the moment like a single panel can.

Also, with anime, there is too much fluff in every episode.
However, I don't know what is their situation nowadays, as I haven't read/ watched either in years.

Personally the people who take it to seriously or try to act Japanese coz of it annoy me the most. Its just stupid.

Bad voice overs...yeah i guess, thats why i always watch the subs not the dubs. Some times there not that bad, but some how Japanese just seems more natural. I think you should always watch something in the original language. I mean who the fuck wants to watch, "crouching tiger, hidden dragon", "hero", "der undergang" etc. in English?

Stories make no sense some times, but that might be a cultural thing. But some of the stereo types and characters to get old really fast. the weak but sensitive guy that wants to be a hero of justice, the violent girl that can't express her self normally. The princess every mecha anime seems to feature for some freaking reason. The male character with some hidden/evil supper power on top of the regular power.

As for overspecialization....yeah kinda but most cartoons or comics aren't much better. (at least no the ones meant for teens to adults). But some shows really over do it.

I mean i still like anime, but it could be better.

Oversexualization, especially the whole giant-tits-everywhere deal, are probably the thing that pisses me off most. Now, if we're getting past general animoo trends and into just recent, 21st century trends, the obnoxious, Call of Doody-style, "let's be as violent and fucked up as possible" trend makes me absolutely RAGE.

Then there's how stupidly short so many of them are.

...And visual novels. Visual novels have had a HORRIFIC effect on gaming, anime, culture, and the world in general. Too many of these stupid pieces of shit are getting animoo adaptation, and their mad popularity among perverted Japanese (and now American) faggots is breaking them into the mainstream. Now, visual novels that DON'T do the aforementioned "let's be super fucked up" bit, or the "lol let's make people fuck" bit aren't so bad. (I do loves me some Phoenix Wright.) But they are the minority. Even FUCKING BLAZBLUE went in this fucked up, sexualized (though non-porno... for now), offensive-as-Hell bullshit with Continuum Shift.

I'll stop now before I think of anything else that makes me wanna break people in half.

I guess my qualm is with certain concepts. I love me some Mecha, but nowadays the only anime I get to watch is on Adult Swim though. Half of it I like, like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and Full Metal Alchemist, but the other half is the Shounen Jump fare of the Shinto Spirit Warrior concept.

I'm just not a fan of that kind of story. I know its intended market is teenagers, but I have full-grown friends that think its great. I think its overused and it tends to take itself WAY to seriously even through its angsty goofiness. I used to like Bleach in its first season when it was just "The Misadventures of Ichigo" with its Alternative/Punk motiff, but then it went into this Shinto Militaristic Spirit Society drama, and it immediately began taking itself way too seriously and lost its flair. For example, there is a character that is a big, bad mothafucka with an eyepatch who strikes fear and respect into his peers, and then he has a little girl that sits on his shoulder like a pirate parrot, and she is taken almost as seriously as he is. How can I take that kind of goofy juxtaposition as seriously as the story wants me to?

Full Metal Alchemist has a military theme, but the military characters treat Ed like the angsty teenager he is. That's fine.

The fact all the characters in anime remain completely motionless when they deliver their lines.
It pisses me off like nails down a chalk-board.

I like good anime as much as I like a good movie. Yet both seem to be plaqued by the same problem: Lack of originality.

Sooner or later every story seems to devolve into The Determinator saves the day by shouting (pulling a power move out of his ass) louder than the opposition.

Bleach and Naruto for one had potential. Then they broke down into crap. Fate/Stay Night is just plain awful in comparison to the written works. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series had an interesting premise but it too devolved into basic Mahou Shoujo mildew.

Seriously, It feels like there hasn't been a really good anime since Trigun, Great Teacher Onizuka or Cowboy Bebop.

Oh right, Hellsing is the exception to that rule. But everything else just makes me think "the same old, same old."

Just like Hollywood.

I am only captured by anime if within the first few minutes the plot seems deep and interesting and if the animation is well drawn. I feel a lot of anime are too sketchy... I dunno. I just get a feel for certain ones and cannot get into others.

Although the tendency for English dubbing to suck really grates on my nerves (I watch subbed almost exclusively for this reason), the rabid fan-base is a real let down. I watch anime because I'm an animation history hobbyist. I watch animated film from all over the world going all the way back to the black and white era. Japan releases such a large volume of animation compared to the rest of the world that I can't help but watch a lot of anime, it's just a matter of numbers.

That being said, the amount of japanaphiles I've met that are willing to watch anything anime regardless of quality bothers me. I can appreciate preferring Japan's approach to animation over the West's methods, but devouring all of it, regardless of quality of the writting or the art is like going to a book store and buying everything in the fiction section. It makes no sense. I'm not going to get into what I consider a good anime or not, whether or not your going to like something is subjective to taste, regardless of the quality of the product, but for christ's sake exercise some sense of personal taste. It can't all be good just because it's from "over there".

ditto. While i do like the occasional ecchi series its getting pretty ridiculous now. >.<

So do I and I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy quite a few of the light hearted moe shows, but nothing of it is really memorable, it all feels samey and other genre are pretty much dead right now.

Most series these days can be summarized with "Was kinda fun to watch, won't remember it in 3 weeks".
For temporary enjoyment that's fine, but for an entire medium it's a sad state of affairs.

I don't have problem with anime in and of itself. I watch plenty of it because it's either funny or suspensful or whatever else I'm looking for in a show.

I am a little annoyed with the tendency to stick to the younger characters, the fact that only the 17+ anime seem to have the good animation, and I don't mean porn, I mean shows like Berserk, Elfen Lied, Gantz, Claymore, and several others. Not that there aren't exceptions to the animation quality rule. I thought Code Geass was pretty well done.

Also, more than anything else, I HATE cliches that pop up time and again in anime. "You can do it, I believe in you!" "We should all just be friends!"

I remember playing Borderlands with a friend of mine and the Guardian Angel chick towards the end said, "You can do this, I believe in you."

I turned to my friend and said, "Dude, there's no way we can lose now, she believes in us."

It's mostly stuff like that, but occasionally you see anime that gets around or approaches the cliches in a different way.

Most of those things are wrong with it. I am mostly annoyed with how in most animes/mangas the women pretend to be all badass and get in the line of fire etc, and then get into trouble so all the men have to go save them without being bothered by it. I'm fine with female fighters/protagonists, but at least do it good. Also women tend to be pretty unintelligent, childish and so poor that they can't afford clothing.

All of the above. I'd say what bugs me the most is 99% of all animes revolve around teenage protagonists. I get that 12-25 is the target demographic but I can not identify with such characters. The problem I find with young protagonists is the get far too melodramatic over trivial shit.

I wish anime would almost go back to that noir-ish era they had in the late 80s early 90s with mature protagonists dealing with mature situations. Last anime I enjoyed was Read or Die movie.
