This is pure conjecture, but what if Sony eliminated backward-compatibility in the PS3 because the PS2 has refused to die? With the price difference between a new PS3 and PS2, ceasing production of the PS2 could mean that some households would go without (or buy a used PS2), instead of buying a PS3. Do you think this is a reason (or THE reason) for taking the feature out of later-model PS3s? Would you buy a new PS3 if Sony added BWC back in?

I got my 60gig right at the release so I never really thought they would take it out, however, if I had to buy one now, I would track down a BWC model because I love playing PS2 games and I don't have room for two systems to be hooked up back and forth.

No, Sony makes no money out of used PS2's. It was purely a cost issue for the hardware to be in there. Although there are rumors that we may soon be able to buy PS2 games on PSN.

And that's the real reason we don't have BC on the ps3. They want us to re-buy our favorite old games off psn.
I'm certainly not going to buy any of it; except for maybe the occasional rare game that might go up there: anything that would cost more if I bought it off ebay. My ps2 still works fine.

Yes, I don't have a PS3 because by the time I might have afforded one they didn't have backwards compatibility any more. After they add it back in, then I'll consider replacing my PS2.

I wouldn't buy a PS3 if they added back the Backwards-Compatibility mainly because i just bought a PS3, i still have my own PS2 and i don't mind it at all, switching cables is kinda annoying sometime but i don't really care

Besides just adding in the emotion engine was one of the reasons it cost so much in the first place
