The Extra Punctuation a few weeks ago got me thinking about starting a petition to have BC returned in all PS3s. I don't have one set up right yet, because I don't know where would be the best place to go.

However I feel that if the Escapist Community got together and signed a Petition we might have a chance at success.

Here are a few Ideas of mine that would go with the Petition and tell Sony how we(The Community) feel and want.

1. Return the BC in all PS3s not just in a new line of PS3

2. It does not have to be complete at release date.
What I am saying with this is that we understand these take time and effort and are difficult to code so if Sony were to release an app that say adds only the top 100 titles and then they updated the app over time to add more and more titles from there within say a 2 year span then that would be okay. I don't know much about emulators but that's the general Idea

3. HD Collections don't need to stop being made.
HD Collections are fine, and they do introduce new games to either a newer generation of gamers or to older generations that missed out on them (I missed SoTC and the sly games) but having the collections in place of BC is a NO

4. Ps2 classics would sell in the store
The PSone classic collection is selling and the HD Collections are selling as well but there is only a handful of titles. Putting in BC would allow Sony to put more games on the store and people would buy them I'm sure. as for pricing I would say 14.99 to 19.99 is fair and people would buy them if not for the game alone for the trophies most definitely.

That at the moment is all I can come up with, give me your Ideas and thoughts and hopefully we as a community will make a difference and let Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo that we want BC in all future consoles, there really isn't an excuse to not have it as a feature anymore.

Well...
[HEADING=3]YES! SIGN ME UP A MILLION TIMES![/HEADING]

I just purchased Persona 3 and 4 and I love them. Of course, I still have my other collections of PS2 classics like Sly, Ratchet, Jak, and Kingdom Hearts. I would like to play all these games on one console to reduce hassle.
(My PS3 is also my platform of choice)

Anyway, how do you plan on letting these major companies know of our opinion petition?

I would email the Petition once I get enough signatures. I am sure a simple Google search would lead to an email to someone high up.

If it plays Final Fantasy X and they fix the issue with playing a lot of PAL copies of Final Fantasy VIII on the PS3 then I'll be happy.

Yes, I would sign it.

Sure, I'd sign that (even though I have a release PS3 with full BC).

However, I doubt it will happen. The PS2 backwards compatibility was an extra piece of Hardware in the older PS3s. I doubt you could do it with software only. And if you could, it would probably just be an emulator, which could be iffy.

And even if you could, I doubt Sony would want to release old games on PS2 in stores - too much expense for not much return.

Still, there are plenty of PS2 games in the Used market.

So yeah, I'd sign. I doubt it will work, but I'll give it a shot. Why not?

The first day I started playing my backwards compatible PS3 was the last day I played a PS2 game. Sure I kept a couple of favorites around for nostalgia sake, but even them eventually got given away due to only collecting dust. Just like the card reader. Used it once to try it out. Never touched it again.

So no, I wouldn't wish to add anything to the PS3 to help make it cost more and become more problematic. Unless maybe we're talking about going back to 4 USB ports.

Practically impossibly short of software emulation. Sorry guys but no previous models will be made Backward Compatibl eno matter how many people sign a petition; Sony just won't call back every PS3 to stick in a (not all that reliable) emulation chip. Not that software based emulation isn't possible, I just highly doubt it ever happening.

I'm really not a petition kind of person, but some comments:

1. The original backwards compatibility was built into the PS3 hardware. They could add an emulator in a patch. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS1 compatibility is mostly just an emulator.

Even if they do release an official emulator, it wouldn't be as simple as just popping in PS2 games and having the emulator run. Impossible? Of course not. Worth the effort and money? Possibly, but I doubt it.

2. I'm not sure if you mean release digital emulator-compatible copies of PS2 games or have the emulator work on physical games overtime, but the former would be nice and for the latter see above.

3. I will assume they keep doing this regardless. In cases like this, the way to get them to keep doing so is to not send petitions, but to buy the ones that do come out. Show them it will work for them, don't tell them. I believe these generally work using on-disc emulators as well.

4. If you mean the Playstation Network store, than yes that's a good idea.

Anyway, not a bad idea overall, but I assume after enough time they'd start to release PS2 classics in the PSN store anyway. It would serve you well to make your ideas a little bit clearer

When Sony cut BC from PS3 they were able to reduce the pirice by 100$. You can pick up a PS3 for only 50$ or probably cheaper on Amazon or Craigslist, so just buy a PS2.

Yes! Bring it back! And while we're on the subject of functionality that Sony removed after their initial launch, bring back Other OS as well!

They made what was literally the best selling game console in history with over 2000 games in its library. Its library is apparently not good enough for the PS3 anymore. I think a slight price hike in exchange for the ability to play dozens, if not hundreds of good games on the PS3 would be well worth it.

Nope. Backwards compatibility is expensive and PS2s are cheap.

Besides, anyone who still plays older games probably still has a functioning system to play them.
