I already have a backwards compatible PS3. :) She's my baby. <3

And I doubt it'll ever happen, no matter how many people sign a petition.

Nope. Backwards compatibility is expensive and PS2s are cheap.

Besides, anyone who still plays older games probably still has a functioning system to play them.
I have a backward ps3 and I still can't remember the last time I actually tossed an old ps2 game inside, I mostly have it just for principal. Not to mention I have like 3 random ps2's sitting around the house that still work. Yeah, no backward, buy a ps2.

Yes, I would sign, even though I know the effect would be minimal.

I say this as a person who paid for a BC PS3. Note the operative words there: "paid for", and not "bought and received". I had fully paid off the machine, when two weeks later I was told they weren't making it anymore, but if I paid more money, I could get a model with less space and no BC. What a deal, where do I sign!?

Seriously. I got a refund, and bought an XBOX. That'll learn 'em.

I have since bought a newer model PS3, but am still really unhappy with the decision, given my PS2 seems to be on it's last legs. Not that you can buy a new one seemingly anywhere these days. It's second-hand, or order specially at a decent price.

Not decent for me, decent for retailers.

Educate me on this guys, I understand that the hardware backwards compatibility of the "fat" PS3's have been discontinued but I thought the slims still had "software" backwards compatibility- similar to xbox360- where it works on an emulator.

Does it not work?

It'll never happen. Why would Sony re-enable backward compatability when it'd be a direct competitor with their PS Store?

In most of the consoles its impossible, the emulation took place because of certain hardware in some models. It is near impossible in the newer models.

seccond off do you really expect them to reinstate backwards compatability when theres a huge market to get people to buy them again, in other words not happening.

1. Return the BC in all PS3s not just in a new line of PS3

2. It does not have to be complete at release date.
What I am saying with this is that we understand these take time and effort and are difficult to code so if Sony were to release an app that say adds only the top 100 titles and then they updated the app over time to add more and more titles from there within say a 2 year span then that would be okay. I don't know much about emulators but that's the general Idea
Sure, I'd sign that (even though I have a release PS3 with full BC).

However, I doubt it will happen. The PS2 backwards compatibility was an extra piece of Hardware in the older PS3s. I doubt you could do it with software only. And if you could, it would probably just be an emulator, which could be iffy.

And even if you could, I doubt Sony would want to release old games on PS2 in stores - too much expense for not much return.

Still, there are plenty of PS2 games in the Used market.

So yeah, I'd sign. I doubt it will work, but I'll give it a shot. Why not?
The British first-run PS3's backwards compatibility was an emulator programme so i see no problem with making it downloadable.

Personally i just want it because all my 2 scart connected consoles (PS2 and Xbox 360) through my HD tv make everything so murky and dark as to be practically unplayable that I haven't touched them for months.

Off topic; if anyone can tell me how to make them unmurky and less like looking through muddy water then it'd be massivley appreciated.

(My TV is an Acoustic Solutions 32" screen and i'm using a full pin scart for the Xbox and the original PS2 scart which came with pins removed.)

I don't have a PS3 but i have plenty PS2 and PS games so sign me in. They could start with the greatest hits games. Sadly that PS store competition argument is strong. Technically a pc can run PS and PS2(not sure) emulators so why the PS3 wouldn't.

at the risk of sounding like i know nothing. i found in the settings menu under games on my new ps3 160 gig an option to turn on ps2 texture smoothing and faster load times. i have no idea why that would be there if ps2 was completely blocked out. probably nothing, but worth mentioning, anyone shed light on that for me?

You can buy a second hand Playstation 2 for around ?30.
Seems a lot easier than nagging to Sony.

Ok lets clarify here. There are two forms of BC in PS3s.

The first incarnation which was hardware based emulation that emulated roughly 80% of games.

The second was in their second generation of PS3s with the 80gb Hd (Us) which operated soley on software emulation and was able to emulate the PS2 at less than 60%.

Hardware emulation is obviously impossible to enable on all PS3s because not all PS3s have the same chip architecture now.

Software emulation is clearly inferior and can only emulate a little better than half the library. As such it is no threat to the PS store (because most of what it emulates invariably will be 3rd party games of which they arent trying to sell on the store anyway) and there is absolutely zero reason NOT to enable it on all PS3s across the board. I am in full support in reenabling the software Emulation back to PS3s

When I bought a PS3 I was sure to buy an old 60 GB, so mine already is backwards compatible.

Jealous?

You're jealous.

Please yes please! I lost my PS2 and it doesn't plug into my HD monitor anyway without a bunch of extra adapter bits. That was one of the best systems ever and i want to play my games! Also, i want to buy more games. I want to play persona 4 and others. Please Sony please!
