The only reason I bought a console at all was because BioWare told us Mass Effect wouldn't be coming for PC.

Why would I buy a PS3? It doesn't even have Halo or Gears, just a bunch of japanese games.

the fact that I made this thread already notwithstanding, I like that Sony has finally decided to drop the price, but removing the backward compatibility is a move that is seriously costing them. Believe me, as someone who's trying to convince people all day long to buy a PS3, it's still kind of a hard sell.

You, sir, are everything that is wrong with the gaming community.

To be perfectly honest, I reckon the real reason being the total drop of PS2 compatibility is because they're still selling a decent number of PS2 consoles (hell they still out-perform everything but the Wii most months)

Ironic really that from the start the PS2 has been what has financed the PS3 and kept the Sony Electronic Entertainment Division from being closed; and 3 years on, we're still seeing this to be true.

Sony should've learnt last generation that you don't need to be the biggest and best, simply to provide gamers with everything they need to play games. Sad that they entered the console market dominating with what could be deemed underpowered hardware.

Sony Playstation, Nintendo N64, Sega Saturn... the most powerful of the three failed horribly and the least powerful came up trumps.

Sony Playstation 2, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube... same story

Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony Playstation 3... anyone else seeing a pattern emerging? cause aparently Sony were too retarded to.

I don't own one, but ive always rooted for Sony to succeed, for the sake of the competition. Now, it sounds like there taking 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Wii has the casual market cornered, your competing for real gamers, and real gamers tend to like there classic games.

Maybe i'm skewed, i'm a PC enthusiast looking at this from a very detached perspective.
I consider myself and my mates to be a real gamers.
Geeks/fanboys or people just wanting to remiss in times gone by play classic games. Real gamers move with the times because the games get better with time.
Oh, no doubt that games are going in great places these days. No doubt that the focus should be on new games. But there's still good things available in old games, and there's nothing wrong with replaying a classic game from an old system which you like. Just like how I greatly enjoy a wide variety of new movies, and like a lot of the improvements they have, but I will still re-watch, "Casablanca" every now and again. If they already have the capacity for backwards compatibility, why remove that for no particular reason?

I have a friend who owns an X Box, plays new games, and loves them. He is almost always playing something new. But he waited excitedly for Jet Set Radio to hit the list of backwards compatible games, and is excited about Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 on X Box Arcade, originally an X Box game. That's not living in the past, that's an entirely legitimate reason to want and enjoy backwards compatibility, and I think Sony is shooting themselves in the foot.

I'm bummed. I bought my PS3 in February, and was really surprised that it would not play ps2 games (80gb model). When I saw the slim and the price, I was a bit miffed. So now I have a bigger, hotter, more expensive version that's still not backward compatible.

The lack of backwards compatibility is a bit annoying, but it's why I keep the older consoles (or at least try to...). That being said, I'm still on the fence about it, strangely enough due to the price.

Going by the logic that it's priced 299 in all three main regions, it makes sense to say it will be around 249 - 299 GBP (depending on where you get it). This still works out to 413.15 USD.

Then again, I probably paid the same for the Xbox 360 and am now just bitching because you bloody Americans get all your shit cheaper than us, while our shit is somewhat higher due to the exchange rate.
Not to mention tax, shipping charges, the fact that the World hates us...Etc.

I thought none of the PS3s were backward compatible anymore, so they aren't really omitting something as they are just not adding something.
