Does one position run cooler then the other?
What is optimum?

Wondering if anyone has an opinion regarding the Horizonal vs. Vertical position.

Shown with External HDD in Antec fan cooled enclosure.

I thought that the Slim needed an extra piece of hardware in order to stand vertically.

I'd keep it Horizontal. From what I've heard, it reads discs a little bit easier that way. Plus, it's how I have my PS3.

I keep both my PS3 and Xbox 360 on their sides, but it's more about the fact that I have them on carpet and they tend to lean precariously if I put them vertically.

I vote vertical, because when put it in my TV stand (thus, horizontally) I find that both the PS3 and 360 get much, much, MUCH hotter in an enclosed space than they do out in the open. Seeing as how I've had both systems for 3+ years and never had any hardware failure (which is a big deal, considering the frequency of RROD), I think vertical and out in the open - and thus cooler - is better.

Not to be an electronics nazi, but you might want to avoid keeping these systems on the floor, lest they clog with dust and overheat. I've seen it happen too many times - just a word of warning!

i prefer vertical for space reasons, i had my 360 and ps3 (fat) but because you need a stand for the slim and i haven't got round to buying one yet, my slim is horizontal.

Horizontal. It reads discs better and much easier in that position. Both my 360 and PS2 are placed in a horizontal position.

idk if this matters, but i got my 360 at launch, and i was being super super stupid, but on my desk there was a shelf that literally fit the 360 PERFECTLY (as in air tight perfect) horizontal, and it didn't red ring till this past fall and when it did red ring its when i took it to my dorm and had it going vertical, i have no idea if that counts for anything at all, but just stating what happened

as of now, i leave everything horizontal, especially my 360 since it has the old fashioned disk tray

Yeah idk for sure either, I just know that my best friend has gone through 4 360's and 3 PS3's (yes, you read that right, he pisses away money left and right) all of which crapped out, all of which were kept in his TV stand, and I've never had a problem with either. The one time I tried it, they were both super hot even after brief periods of gameplay. So I say F that, they're staying in the wide open, vertically, on their own pretty little shelves.

I cut out the back of my tv stand for this reason. Better circulation = better system life

Horizontal, my 360 would also be horizontal if I had room for it, and I don't think both consoles would survive if I put my PS3 on top of my 360.(my PS3 is on top of my computer and my 360 stands next to it, and I have all three connected to my monitor)

My PS3 can only sit horizontally in my TV stand. Plus, I could never live with myself if my cat knocked it over.

I'm more or less the same, except for my Wii, mostly because I don't have enough space to have it AND my PS3 side by side without fear of both of them catching fire.
The PS3 though, is horizontal. I wanna get more space to put it out. I"m working on rearanging my room as we speak.

I've never had a system sit vertical yet. I'm always afraid they'll fall. It's also a pain in the ass to load the disc (at what point did disk become disc anyway?)

I don't have a PS3, but I keep my PS2 horizontal. I'd probably do the same thing if I had a PS3.

I generally keep it horizontal... especially with the slim, I don't think your meant to put it upright anymore...

How can I tell?

Because the little 'PS' sign doesn't rotate anymore on the Slim version (which made me a sad bunny D':)

I saw a test somewhere which showed how hot a 360 and a PS3 got when vertical and horizontal using a thermal cam. Needless to say, I keep both of mine horizontal now.

Edit: Found a pic.

Although they do just show the front for the horizontal one.
