I keep my slim horizontal, for the sole reason that it's the only way it can fit in my TV stand as the shelves are too short for it to stand up.

I have mine (along with all my consoles) horizontal.

It seems to me that the discs would be fucked up if I were to place it vertically.

From what I have heard (I don't know if this is entirely true) is that the reader won't last as long if you stand your system vertically since it puts more stress on the moving parts inside the console. Can anyone confirm?

Horizontal, since it (my fat PS3, mind you) is placed in my TV stand.
I vote vertical, because when put it in my TV stand (thus, horizontally) I find that both the PS3 and 360 get much, much, MUCH hotter in an enclosed space than they do out in the open. Seeing as how I've had both systems for 3+ years and never had any hardware failure (which is a big deal, considering the frequency of RROD), I think vertical and out in the open - and thus cooler - is better.

I keep both my PS3 and Xbox 360 on their sides, but it's more about the fact that I have them on carpet and they tend to lean precariously if I put them vertically.
Not to be an electronics nazi, but you might want to avoid keeping these systems on the floor, lest they clog with dust and overheat. I've seen it happen too many times - just a word of warning!
ya...thats right for the PS3 TV stand...

Horizontal. The only reason I can see for putting it vertical is if you have space constraints. Otherwise it just seems safer to put it horizontal.

And I've read varying opinions on the cooling doodad pictured in the OP. I've never tried one, been tempted, but never tried it.

Horizontal. PS3 Slims have issues with the Blueray readers, and forcing it to stand on its side seems to worsen the issue (at least, that's what the guy in the store told me -- I can attest to the BR problems since my PS3 broke down within 4 months).

Got it in an open stand so it has enough circulation.

To sum this up, it's best to have the console horizontal with an open area for a few reasons.

Vertical problems:
1) Possible disc read errors.
2) Increased probability of knocking the console over.

I'm forced to have mine vertical due to space restraints. Given the choice I would go with having it horizontal. In the past I had my PS2 chunky vertically, and the scanner in that broke after 2 years or so.
