As everyone probably knows by now, PSN has been down for a good couple of days. This is obviously a big inconvenience to all Playstation users, and I was curious about the Escapist's thoughts on it. What kind of trouble has the PSN Outage caused you? Who/What do you think is behind it?

Dicuss.

This especially sucks for me. Just got Portal 2 in the mail (I'm mainly gonna play it on PC, but a PS3 copy and $20 Amazon credit was too good to pass up) and I can't link my Steam account, so I can't even play my PC copy (I could play the campagin on PS3, but... eugh...). Oh yeah, and there's that tin issue of MY CREDIT CARD INFO COULD BE AT RISK.

Personally, I don't think it was Anonymous. Maybe a splinter group, but Anonymous seems to have this wierd sense of honor. They'll hack, they'll sling mud, they'll shut you down, but they will NOT lie. I recall hearing that the servers were muss'd by the earthquake. But now Sony says it WAS an outside force... So it's completely up in the air, if it WAS the quake, why would Sony call out hackers? And if it WAS hackers, why do they keep pointing fingers at Anonymous? Yes, they've butted heads, but Anonymous called a truce, I don't see why Sony would still want them as an enemy. Maybe to keep people calm? A known enemy is more reassuring than "we have no idea who the hell did this" I suppose... Idk, bottom line, the whole thing sucks, discuss below.

Some news kicking about suggests that it was some hackers using a hacked firmware version to download free stuff off of PSN forced Sony to shut down the service to 'investigate' read, find a way to fix the exploit. The info so far says that the network hasn't been brought down by an outside group it has been taken off line by Sony themselves.

As for effect, well it's free, and uh it's free and oh yeah it's free. It's the first time since I had my PS3 that I have had an issue with the service and whilst I would have liked to have played MK9 against my mate I some how managed to survive without being able to do that.

I'm sure it's one group of self righteous douchebags, 'taking a stand' and all that nonsense.

I don't care what 'group' they belong to, they're still fuckwads.

This sounds reasonable. Afterall, since the rootkey was hacked stuff like this happing was only a matter of time.

Don't care at this point.

I just hate people insulting Sony over this.

Really, it's probably some twats angry about Geohot. And now Sony is rebuilding everything...

*sigh*

Y'know what would be ultimately ironic? If the hackers that did bust through and force Sony to shut down the PSN in order to stop any leaking had to use the jailbreak key Geohotz posted in order to do it.

Would show why Sony's been in the right since Day 1 of this whole thing.

The rootkey only gives unfettered access to your console, not the PSN.

OT: I don't use my PS3 that much and the majority of that time is spent disconnected from the PSN anyway. Can't say this has really affected me since the PS3 has been kind of a "meh" console for me. Same with the 360 just not as bad. There really hasn't been a variety of interesting games for me to spend money on since the N64/PS1 era.

I don't know much about hacking (except that I dispise the people who do it), but from what I heard the rootkey gives you complete control over your console. My guess is this would also give you the oppertunity to screw around with the Playstation Store, but I might be wrong.

Let's hope so.

that's why from day one I sided with Sony on the whole hacking case couse even though Geohotz didn't intend to do it he opened a floodgate for people to pirate and spoil things for other people

P.S. but i do agree that it was a ***** move from sony to take away the multiple OS feature from the PS3 and other stuff on their service could/should be better handled but I enjoy the PSN with all of it's functionality(an there is a lot of things you can do on it) so I'm kinda angry over the whole hacking thing

I don't care about not being able to get online or anything like that. I just hope whichever asshole did it didn't steal people's personal information.

Though, finding info on PSN subscribers through their credit cards, tracking them down and harassing them... that seems like the type of thing some idiotic "internet vigilante" might do.

I'm probably just paranoid about that, but still, anything's possible.
I'd better go find something blunt or sharp just in case.

My guess is that because SONY TOOK THEM DOWN TO REBUILD THEM, they're moving to the PPM (Pay Per Month) format that was rumored.
And you never thought to put a "Sony" option in the polls?

Lulz that rumor turned into PS Plus.

I think this was Anonymous. It makes sense.

Though you can't really call any one group Anonymous.... THey're fucking everything.

No one took down PSN.

There was someone outside who was accessing information that Sony deemed important and Sony pulled the plug.

In recent memory there is only 1 group of people who had express plans to access information involving Sony. Anonymous may be claiming that they didn't knock PSN out, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is their fault.
