I am refering to the live action superhero movies they've done, where at times, for no discernable reason characters unmask themselves. In spiderman 3 every time venom would banter to peter he would draw back the face portion of the symbiote suite. I know why they do it, to give the actor face time, but come on I know he's Eddie brock, I saw him earlier. This was at its worst in Iron man 2, Tony and Rhodie opening thier masks during the breather seemed a little off but(SPOILER ALERT)

Whiplash popping his off midfight was pretty goddamn rediculous especially since somone could have just repulsor blasted him in the head instead of thier buddy move.

I agree... the moment his head was exposed I was like where's your auto gun with 100% accuracy... but i guess you have to take a second and realize you are watching a movie and theres supposed to be a bit of dramatic effect.

Plus it would have been anti-climatic.

You answered your own question. There really is no other reason for this than to give the actor face time. Just look at how many times Tobey "I can't act" Maguire had his mask torn off.

This is kinda Similar, in District 9 when the main character is in the Superpowered suit thing, he opens it up to talk to his prawn friend.

"anti-climactic" is the word you're looking for.

OT: Yeah. The thing with Venom annoyed me most of all. Here you've got one hell of a cool-looking villain, and they're taking every opportunity to show the boring human underneath in stead of the real deal. Really annoyed me.

Prawn is a derogatory term for the aliens! REPORTED!!!

In all seriousness though, it can reaaaaaaaally ruin a movie for me sometimes when the heroes or villains unnecessarily expose their fleshy wussy parts. KEEP IT IN THE SUIT!

I think it's kinda pointless when they d it. It's like you said in the Venom example, I know who he his, and I'd like to think the characters have enough of a memory span to know who he is. It's just pointless as far as the scenes go.

Not exactly on topic but the space marine commanders in WH40K always do it too. They may as well be wearing bullseyes and signs saying "I AM IMPORTANT!"
So first order of business would be shoot anyone not wearing a helmet right in their stupid face.
Actually, not wearing a helmet among Space Marines is a sign of courage that in many chapters are "demanded" of them >>. But I always make my guys wear helmets, no matter the rank^^.

Kinda irritates me - like you mentioned in Spider man, in the second film his face is revealed to a whole train of people who I doubt would all keep his secret/not recognise him

Wish they wouldn't do it in alot of these films - however I don't mind in iron man where they show Stark's face inside the suit at times

I just have to say that REALLY doesn't sound right at all.

But yeah in most films that does annoy me, unless the villain has a good reason for it...I'll tell you when I see one come up.

its a movie, that really is the only answer here, movies don't have to stick to common sense or lore, they have a particular form of artistic licence aimed at keeping up the drama and keeping everyone up with the plot, even your senile grandma who's never heard of spider man or your 3 year old brother with the attention span of a gnat.

Yhea, but to be fair those guys are super marines. The commander can take a full clip to the face and still feel well enough to kill you.

That really did annoy me.

I loved that V never did reveal his face, even when it came close a lot of times.

However I think it can be well done. For example in the Watchmen with Rorschach. That was well done.

I think the train bit is excusable. No one took pictures, right? And the odds of people recognising you are pretty slim in a big city like that.

Right but that was part of the plot it didnt look like some utility shit put there to give an actor face time. There are right and wrong ways to do this. You can show the face without busting immersion, showing tony's face inside the mask is a good example.

Yes, I have noticed it. Though it is but one part of the rather annoying craze in superhero movies in the post-Matrix era - "dark and gritty".

To explain, previous generations of superhero movie didn't require the unmasking, as the characters were given more than enough face time in the alter ego. This was done so that the audience could relate to the 'normal' person beneath the mask, and it's how they did it in the comics too. The studios have since realized that people don't give a rat's ass about Bruce Wayne - the money is in Batman.

By unmasking the hero, the audience relates more to the 'super' part of the hero, rather than the human. While doing this does create more accessible, action-oriented content, the nature of the superhero archetype is thus altered (some might even say 'perverted') to a character that's dull as hell without the costume on.

I think its to make sure the actor is doing something. I mean stunt doubles can't have all the fun!
