Am I the only one who misses quake 3 arena?
I still dont believe there has been an online fps as good as it to date. Sure graphics have improved and there are more game modes with deployables and vehicles etc.

But none of them have that same awesome feel quake 3 had to it!
It was in my opinion.. the perfect online shooter.
Too bad these days its populated by cheat servers where everyone fires 20 BFG shots per second...

Yes I know about quake live, but its still just not as good! It doesnt have the massive player base, epic battles and good games are hard to come by..

It was good for back in the day, and quake live is a great time killer. I believe TF2 covers the bases that Quake used to.
Well TF2 is good, but I liked the simplicity of quake, and the blood and the maps and the style of graphics.

I logged on Quake Live a short while ago. The skill cap in that game is sky-high compared to something like TF2, which is (no offense intended) clearly designed for casual play first and foremost. In TF2, even a nub like me can occasionally be one of the better players on a crowded public server. In a QL duel, I get slaughtered. Haven't drilled movement techniques? Auto-loss. Don't know the map by heart? Auto-loss. I don't mind - it's cool that there are games which don't compromise. Q3/QL is such a game.

Nope, I used to play Quake a lot.
Not so much, or at all, these days. I am revisiting some old games I used to play, UT:GOTY, UT 2004, Populous:The Beginning and some others.

I enjoyed playing it so maybe I'll play Quake 3 again at some point.

Have you tried Quake Live? It's basically Quake 3 gold edition for free in your browser, with a large player base and a universal social system. Good stuff.
EDIT: Ah, missed the last sentence of the OP.

I never really got into Quake 3, i always saw Unreal Tournament as a vastly superior game. It just felt quicker, more brutal and more fluid.
Not to mention the maps were more interesting, and by interesting i mean a hell of a lot less brown.

I have tried Quake live a few times recently, and its a good laugh for 20 minutes or so, but i tend to get bored of it if i attempt to play any longer.

Dont forget about Tribes, for some reason everyone dislikes that game. I thought it was really cool, although now i want to go play UT.
I have never heard of Tribes, or I have and forgotten about it.
*dashes off to Google*
Sounds interesting, I might give it a go.

I miss Quake 3 aswell, but not as much as i miss Quake 2 multiplayer. Now thats pure online fps fun xD Also tried the UT -03 and -04 games, but i never got the same feeling as when playing Quake 2 and 3.

Well it's on every computer at my school so it is hard to miss something that is still here.

I never really liked it as much as everybody else seemed to, unless I got a railgun it just wasn't a great game. It wasa good game just not as good as everybody seems to say it was, having a railgun nearly allways made me lose but at least I played the same game as everybody else because of it.

You should give Quake Live another try. They added Instagib and CTF Instagib, added a whole bunch of new maps, both from the previous installments and completely new maps designed specifically for QL, and there's a pretty decent player base now.
