First off I'd like to state that I plan on buying a PS3 by the end of the year, depending on how well I pinch my pennies.

Are there any common issues with the console and/or the software that I should be aware of in advance?

Sure, I can scour the internet, but I prefer to ask on forums.

Edit: The poll was just a throw-in and has nothing to do with my question :)

There'll be a tonne of downloads for any games you get. unlike the 360 where updates are small and regular, Sony hold back and do massive firmware updates.

Haven't had any other problems except that it's nigh on impossible to connect two PS3s to a single router.

Err.. Neither really, i know i wont make a purchase. That said they both look like they'd make a good demo. So i'll take...Prototype, just.

I bought a ps3 the same moment it came out, and have yet to experience any problems with it..
Been working excellent for me, not encountered any downsides as of yet..

I haven't had any real problems with the PS3. Updates are slow and take forever, but they don't happen that often. Mine won't stay connected to the PSN, but that might be a problem on my end. Other than that it has been solid

Ok there is only one problem that I have encountered with my PS3 and I suppose you could say it was my fault. When you make your PSN account do not change any details afterwards because it completely wipes your saves, trophies and any downloads. One day I made a new email address and decided to change my PSN account so that it was my new address but later found that this wiped my PS3. Don't do it.

I have a feeling both of those games are only worthy of a rental.

I don't remember the specifics, but when asked about the length of the game, the lead developer for Infamous dodged the question and said they were more concerned with creating a polished game than a game with substantial length or replay value.

One of my friends is buying a PS3 specifically to play import of Demon's Souls with me and another friend. Demon's Souls looks amazing. Extremely challenging action/RPG with great depth on both the action and RPG aspects, like a gothic Monster Hunter.

Here's a post I made on which games I think are worth buying/renting:

The only warning you need is if you have the feeling that you may at some point want to get a bigger hard drive, just buy it with your ps3 and install it before you even plug in the power for the first time. It'll save you a whole lot of trouble.

It's really easy to do (especially now that they got decent screws) but even if you use the backup utility (or just save saves on a thumb drive) a few of your games will not recognize the old saves or might have other glitches that occur with the data from the old HDD: like GTA4, Burnout, LBP.
In case your wondering now: you can get some really cheap 320-500gb drives on newegg. While you're there get yourself a $8 HDMI cable.

As for infamous & Prototype: I wasn't really too optimistic about infamous until recently when we started getting more details now I'm thinking I might get it; I'll rent it first of course. Prototype on the other hand I've been very excited about since I saw it in action and heard it's being made by the same guys who did Hulk UD- it wasn't deep but I love that game and this looks like the next gen version.
