Lots of strong feelings here, no question about that... I heard mention of online content delivery and Steam. (Thanks Ravenbom, 1 post at time of writing.. Welcome to Escapist forums! :D)

I use Steam and though when it was young I found it buggy and awful, I think it's improved a lot. The download speeds seem to have increased and I made my first purely online purchase there; Audiosurf. Steam has a lot of sweet games and if you buy on special, some sweet prices.

I started this poll after reading about CD Projeckt's (The Witcher) stance on DRM. ZP convinced me to avoid The Witcher (having played the demo already) but I wanna buy the new Enhanced version now just to give them props. CD Projeckt also started gog.com which has some old classics for download, cheap and DRM free! (Whet your Fallout 3 whistle with Fallout 1 or 2 for $6? Sounds pretty sweet...)

I think what I take from all this is a reminder that Gamers like to be treated like honest people, not people under dark suspicion. That we know piracy can have a demoralizing & debilitating impact on developers and want to support the good ones with our hard-earned. We also know that gamers generally aren't interested in (or often even capable of) cracking the copy protection if we don't feel driven to do so by measures which feel stifling and distrustful.

How about this painfully trite analogy? "SecuROM and it's ilk tightens the grip, and more grains of sand slip through the market's fingers."?

Another (maybe paranoid) reason to distrust EA and its SecureROM DRM is that it installed itself if you downloaded the Bioshock demo, and you have to wonder why. Just what info is this not-easily-uninstalled utility sending back to home base.

Killed the secondhand market - check.

Truly makes that £40 (UK) product a rental only.

But I don't think piracy is the answer as it cements their view that that is why sales are falling. Simply refuse to buy or download their products. I was a bit miffed at missing out on Bioshock and Mass Effect but I would rather vote with my wallet.

If both me and my brother want to play a certain game that has multiplayer, we won't buy that game but pirate it instead. We were screwed over twice and we're not doing it again. Screw DRM. For as far as I know, you can't install Red Alert 3 on two computers and play simultaniously. If that's the case, I won't buy it. It'll be a waste of my money, because I won't be able to play it against my brother over LAN or with my brother against other people over the internet.

Count me in the "you can kiss my hirsute left buttock if you think I'm going to buy your games-as-service concept" crowd. I might have bought Far Cry 2 in a year or two when it was in the $20 bin. Now I'm half-tempted to pirate it just for the sake of pirating it.
On the other hand, I'll almost definitely be buying Fallout 3, a game which admits I am entitled to play it as much as I want, as long as I have the disc.
