Hi guys, this is my first post and well it seems that many people seem to carry some sort of enmity towards quick time events. I would understand why, but couldn't you change the format of some sort. Some would require hours upon hours of extra time for games to be released but do you think that would be worth it?

Scenario #1
A games difficult determines a games quick time event's difficulty. For instance if you were playing on EASY mode, then maybe the screen would flash and you could hit any button, and maybe on NORMAL mode the developers would either give you a shorter amount of time to hit any button or make you hit a specific button. Then on HARD mode you would have a shorter amount of time to hit a specific button. This is probably a more viable choice as it would not make the game take forever to create.

Scenario #2
A game where when you activate a quick time event during a boss battle or whatnot and your controller has a completely different control scheme during these events, or similar. For instance there would be specific times, like again, the screen may flash and you could say hit X and do a quick attack, but have it be more cinematic and whatnot. or twirl the analog stick to do some kind of spinning wheel of doom attack. Depending on the strength of these attack they would require more precise timing. This would be quite problematic as this would require developers to make new animations and whatnot. So it would require developers to spend more time and severely delay the release of said game.

These are all ideas and I'm not sure whether or not they would work. But then again, do developers even read these forums? Probably not.

So if you feel that quick time events are fine as is select option 1: "Keep them as is,"
If you feel that Scenario #1 would be a good solution select option 2: "Scenario #1"
If you feel that Scenario #2 would be a good solution select option 3: "Scenario #2"
If you feel that QTEs were a horrible idea in the begin select option 4: "Remove them"
and if you believe that you have a better idea, or just an idea select option 5: "Other"

First off, welcome to the Escapist!

Second, I would actually do quicktime events differently. My main problem with quicktime events is you can't see the action on the screen that you are supposedly making happen.

So here's how I would do it. With each QTE, you go into bullet time. The buttons flash up on the screen and you hit them in the order they display, or you mess up. Either way, as soon as the buttons are done being pressed, time speeds back up to normal, and the event happens. You can either watch yourself perform the action admirably, or fail miserably.

I call this the Sherlock Holmes QTE, since the idea came from the Sherlock Holmes movie, where he goes over his moves before he does them.

Anyway, I would like it this way because then I could see what the hell I was doing.

I would say the same kinda thing as meganmeave but add that if its a movement you making happen try to have it so you more the analog stick it a way similar to the movement. heavey rain did this very well. e.g. down then slide right to open a bottom shelve.

Welcome welcome! We have many great features here that are not Zero Punctuation, make sure to check them out! Don't go near the basement and you'll be fine.

I personally just say remove them, or at least make them so prominent that it's not a surprise when they rear their ugly little heads.

QTEs? I'd bin them.

It's either a playable section, or it's a cutscene. Unskippable cutscenes that punish you for failing to pay attention are crap, no way round it they're just crap. But especially if you die/fail the playable section immediately after it and have to go through the same unskippable QTE every damn time.

They're just lazy design.

I dont see how solution 2 is any different to the QTEs out now. meganmeaves approach imo is the most practical after completely removing them of course.

Meganmeave, I understand what you are talking about, and that would also be a viable option,

TheComedown, Solution number 2 gives you a choice, for instance during that period of time you can input any command. Like lets say if your playing God of War and you hit square, you'll do a light attack (I think), during that period, but you can also hit triangle and use a heavy attack. (The buttons may be wrong.)
