Poll: Quick time events

There is one part of Resident Evil 4 that really stood out for me, and that was when...

you engage in an awesome knife fight with Krauser. The whole boss fight is a long chain of quick-time events that translates into an extremely elegant, dance-like duel to the death. Afterwards, Leon has to navigate a laser hallway (a la ... Resident Evil) using a series of backflips and otherwise astounding acrobatics to not end up losing a limb. All through a quicktime event.

I would also like to mention a humorous one in Arkham Asylum when...

Batman hallucinates that he is back at the beginning of the game, but he is being wheeled into the Asylum and you temporarily take control of the Joker. After a while, you switch back to controlling Bruce, but from the first-person perspective of him strapped to an upright gurney. Joker puts a gun to the bat's head and pulls the trigger. It kills him instantly and sends you to the screen that asks you if you want to quit or retry, saying that you needed to nudge the stick to dodge the bullet. No symbol or anything. Upon hitting retry, you are sent to a totally different part of the game where Batman continues his hallucination. I thought that was a very good mindfuck myself.

I liked them in Resident Evil 4, the God of War games, and Indigo Prophecy, especially Indigo Prophecy because I could miss a few buttons and still finish the event. Quick time events are not intrinsically bad, but most developers use them in the wrong way.

They're good sometimes, like for finishing moves when you've already won a fight and have the chance to either finish normally or see a supercool move take place. Other times too, they can be okay. The whole "PRESS X NOT TO DIE!!!11111" thing is just stupid though.

And if anyone votes the 'Yahtzee' option on the poll, I will personally find that person through their IP address and give the IP address to /b/, as well as firebomb their house with rotting eggs and dog poo. You have been warned...

I usually hate them, but I find that the can work well if they are mixed in with normal combat or used for finishing moves.

Heh, I'm surprised nobody called me out on that sooner. Yeah, I started out with the ZP avatar and the only reason I haven't changed it is because I quite like it with the pink lightsaber, which I had done by the Holdiay Council ages ago in memory of Darth Mobius and Darth Empyrean's stillborn daughter. A lot of us had the lightsabers done back then, and I just kept mine because I liked it so much.

What I don't like is the ZP fanboys who think Yahtzee is God and who can't think for themselves, and even he hates those people too, so it's no big deal

I like QTE's, but in Re5 they're bullshit. There's one in Act II against El gigante where they give you like half a second (if that) to press it, and I always fail miserably.

The entire game of Fahrenheit was a massive QTE! That's all it was. Quicktime Event - The Game!

They weren't horrible in Force Unleashed, but I don't like them in RE4. Because they're usually insta-kill, and not always fair about how much time you have to react.

Depends how they are used.
Sometimes good, sometimes unessercary.
Its just irritating when they are sprung on you out of no where so your left blindly fumbling for the controller in a panic.

There were some in the PC version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, as I recall. I don't remember any others.

There were some in the PC version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, as I recall. I don't remember any others.

Hm and I guess that was because they were ports from the console games. That's a very interesting fact

They need to stay out of my cutscenes. I have no problem with button presses in the game itself to dodge attacks, as long as there is no severe penalty for failing them.

Example of bad QTE: Missing a button press during a boss's introduction cutscene sends you back to a restart point.
Example of good QTE: One type of attack from certain enemies can always be avoided by inputting a certain button combination which is displayed clearly onscreen. If the player fails this, they will lose health.

Yeah, during RE4 I thought they were nice because they kept you on your toes even during cut scenes. However, I think that they have become overused, and I DEFINITELY think that no Wii games should have QTEs, because it's no fun to frantically wave the Wiimote around like an idiot when a Japanese soldier is trying to stab you with a bayonet (CoD 5 WaW, in case you missed that).

My first intro to them was in the God of War games and I thought they were really fun, but when they get to the point that they are replacing actual fights they start to work against the game. For instance the Gears 2 worm sequence got a little excessive for me.

I had written a nice lengthy answer before you foolishly had your last post locked for the sake of a poll, and to be honest I really cannot be bothered to re-write it all so I shall summarise.

- They can be good if they fit the game e.g. Dead Space.
- They are bad when they are in multiplayer e.g. Gears of War 2.
- Nobody seemed to hate them before Yahztee mentioned them.

I've always had quick time events/forces time events in games.

QTES:
-Half the time they don't belong (Damn you ninja blade)
-They distract from what could be a generally awesome cutscene (Resident Evils)
-I just hate randomly mashing buttons that pop when I'm trying to enjoy the view

Timed Events
-poorly placed
-i hate being time on stupid things, like the big gorons sword in Zelda/ All of Majora's mask


I've been a QTE hater for a long time. My brother loves them, we fight.

Yeah.. I don't mind quick time events, but I hate it when games that have no buisness having them have random quick time apearances.

That's why I liked Wet. It was a game build around quick time events, but none were surprising.
