Do you believe that there is an over-reaction, under-reaction, or just-right-reaction to the "racism" in the gaming world?

You mean the racist, homophobic, inarticulate douchebags on xbox live? Because I've never actually played a game that I would consider racist.

People are going to find something to argue about. Heck there are people complaining about the 'hidden' messages in Avatar. That it is pretty much the white man attacking colored people, which I thought was funny since they literally are colored, blue. Also they complain because the avatars live on a pristine land, dress like natives and are being attacked by a foreign people. (basically the white man vs the native americans.

It's an overreaction. But in some way, I call racism on the people that say the games are racist. Here's my theory, bare with me.

A white guy killing a black dead person is racist.
But a white guy killing a white guy is alright.

A black guy killing a black guy is alright.
But a black guy killing a white guy is alright?

See what I mean? As long as a white guy is killed, it doesn't matter if the 'killer' is black or white. But vice versa, heads roll (Metaphorically). Therefore, they are racist!

(If people don't like, PM me and I'll get rid of it. >.> Self-preservation!)

Are you talking about people online who just spout homophobic and racist remarks because they're 12 years old, or games like Resident Evil 5 deemed as "racist" because you kill black people (even though you're in Africa). If it's the former or the latter I still think it's an over reaction. The people online who are racist are just stupid and get the banhammer anyway and I've never once played a game I felt was racist.

Bob Chipman explains the whole phenomenon very succinctly [okay, perhaps that was the wrong adjective] in his Game Overthinker episodes on racism in games.

Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw8DkSmJDOg [Episode 9, pre RE5]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhopxZqQrmo [Episode 23, retrospective on RE5 controversy]

I think people over reacted to the supposed "racism" in Resident Evil 5. As do pretty much everyone here.

To be fair, I feel it's more or less impossible to be racist towards us whites due to the fact that (in western society) we are in power. You can't really be racist to someone who has more power than you. Which is one of the many reasons that the BNP are disliked. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Regarding video games I think it really depends on the context of the game.
L4D for example, would be racist if all of the zombies were black and all the characters were white.
Now whilst this is not true, in the first game Louis is only really there as the token black guy, so that is kinda sticky ground...

If you only have 4 characters and a quarter are black, that's not racist. Otherwise 2 of each of the characters would have to be female, and Chinese, and Arabic...

Zombie Apocalypses are not known for their PC status. If we're seriously taking the route that we MUST show every game in relation to the demographic of the time, then we're chucking out a LOT of amazing games into the fire pits, because BIG BROTHER doesn't want you to know of times when we weren't like we are now.

Look at what they've already done with smoking. Removed from Tom and Jerry cartoons.

The world used to be a very racist place. We need to recognise that and move forward, while not allowing people to use the implications of racism to "colour" votes for or against topics that have nothing to do with race, just random distribution.

If you want to see why, take a look at Star Trek's original crew, that had defeated racism and allowed all religions. Still a portly white man in the main chair though.

RE5 - Overeaction. I mean... your partner was black.
Would it not be racist to leave blacks OUT of the zombie horde?

How do you know he's token? Does there have to be 2 black people in the group for it not to be tokenism? Do you think that maybe you're reading too much into it? I thought Louis was a perfectly acceptable character, he was no kind of cliche.

I don't think I've ever played a game that I actually thought was racist.

That's a good point.
I still however stand by the idea that racism in videogames depends on the context.

It's ironic, because if they set L4D2 in New Orleans with no black people, it would be branded as racist for NOT having them, but if they DO, it's suddenly racist for them to exist. I think all the people who shout about gaming racism are hippies deliberately trying to start a paradox.

I believe that many people that is easily offended by "racist" situations are themselves racists.

Anybody who deemed the new resident evil racist because the game is based in a predominantly black country shooting black people is ridiculously over sensitive and need a punch in the face for being too PC. When the same people were playing the previous games running round white cities shooting white zombies nobody said anything about race. no matter what people do there will always be a few who decide to use controversy to spoil the fun for the rest of us

Fair enough there's a line but thats pushing it too far.

There's my angry black man rant for the day.
