Hello, Escapist forum browsers. This is William White, once again taking up your time with what could be another re-done question. Here's hoping I can add a slight spin to it.

I'm sure a percent of our population is anticipating the release of RE5, and that some have already played the juicy demo. In the demo, players can single or co-op what seems to be fundamental encounters between hordes of zombie-LIKE individuals and a single boss, whether it be an executioner or a chainsaw marauder. In truth, I have played both levels, single and co-op with an excellent ally, and can see the slight differences from RE4. The quick-time inventory, the revival of an ally, co-op in general, and the addition of many more melee attacks at one's disposal. All of it seems rather...acceptable.

But is it a revolution, or a remake?

RE4 was said to have revived the survival-horror genre with its behind-the-back shooting, the comfortable firing interface, and the strange new take on 'zombies.' RE4 became one of the sole reasons players bought Gamecubes, next to Super Smash Brothers: Melee, and RE4 hit the Playstation 2, as well as the Wii in later years. Even now, it actually remains a hit in households. That, my friends, was a revolution more than it was a remake.

The query is: is RE5 more of a revolution or a remake in your eyes? And if you would, let's get some juicy discussion on the floor. Thank you.

EDIT: So, if you would like some potatoes just to supplement your inner thoughts, here's the review that some are raving about:

Otherwise, same query stands.

In my opinion, Resi 5 is just a slightly revised remake of Resi 4 (let's not beat around the bush it's a case of 'same shit, different protaganist').

Resi 4 was probably so 'revolutionary' because it was the begining of the end for Survival Horror. It took everything that made it a SH and threw it out the window to make it yet another 3rd person shooter (it would be like making a FPS version of Final Fantasy, it may be a good game and revolutionise the series with a new perspective and control scheme but that won't change the fact that it isn't a FF game).

In short, Resi 4 was the bastard child of the classic Resi games and Gears of War (I am aware that Gears probably came out later but I'm being metaphorical here) and Resi 5 will be 4's younger, chav brother.

Maybe it wasn't traditional survival horror... but I still remember encountering horrors in RE4 AND having to survive them, and RE5 looks to be the same... :p

I'm very excited for RE5... as a fan of RE4. It would seem that the controls which remain unchanged from its previous incantation are apparently awkward this time around, and causing a lot of people to avoid this game. But I know I will enjoy at least a good 3 solid playthroughs of the main story alone, so of course I am picking this up.

Its hardly revolutionary, but it is a solid sequel. It changes some things, but not the whole game or engine. Its more like RE4 than any other game, which is a great thing as RE4 was such an amazing game! I just wish I had a friend I could play it with :(

Ahah; I would actually have to, thus far, agree with both of you on this issue.
There's nothing that sets RE5 apart from RE4 that I haven't mentioned, and Iron Mal was quick to mention that RE4 may not even truly be a survival-horror game.

I'm awaiting a glorious champion for RE5 as a revolution, to see if someone truly takes the side that RE5 is entirely different. Perhaps due to the schema of it being co-op? Again, just taking the affirmative.

OK i posted this in another thread but here is what i think about Resi 5

Well Resi 5 makes things a little more intresting by adding a co-op mode but apart from that there pretty much the same game.

Same enemies just reskined, same giant troll like thing (can't remember the name el bollocks springs to mind), majority of the horror has been lost, then again i played Resi 1 when i was 7/8 and the only thing that scared me was the first zombie cutscene uhh i hated that.

Same tactics as Resi 4 if in trouble with a boss, rocket launcher it

Resi 4 was revolutionary i would disagree in terms of surival horror but it was revolutionary in a Resident evil game, say goodbye to zombies the slow shambling fellas who only wanted to eat your brains.

The whole las plagas parasite just seems to me a excuse to use recent hollywood zombie, super fast and super strong while it was a nice touch to bring back cerberus and the lickers.

I just hope Resi 6 brings back the slow zombies that we all know and love.

But if people get the 'better' controls they are clamoring for, slow zombies wouldnt present any kind of challenge, unless you had a whole ton of them...

I would enjoy that kind of game (sans super soldier controls though), more zombies but slower... and maybe scarcer ammo! I find RE4/5 tense as it is, with the multiple zombies closing in as I frantically try to take them out... I can't even imagine how much more tense that would be :)

In my opinion it'll be a remake.

I also heard about the controversy, I don't think they did it on purpose or even realized it'd be a problem until some journalist (Most likely white, ironicly) got up in arms "OH NOEZ RACIST!"

Or at least I sincerely hope it was an accident and not their first steps of going the Rockstar route of "Add controversy, sprinkle gameplay on top, ship out" then

I think its more a new entry. It gos deeper into the story. Yes it may have the same play style a bit revised, but it is still a new game.

Once I saw the gameplay and the setting it went from a game that I had to buy on its release day to a game where I'll wait a few months and buy it off of some guy on Craigslist for cheap. I love the series, but I'm pretty skeptical of this transition into more shoot-'em-up adventure and less survival horror.

Why not just introduce slow zombies alongside realistic aiming (accuracy decreases if you move) and incredibly low ammo availability?

That would make it work.

Resident evil 5 suffers from the same thing as Peggle Nights:

Yes the first one (or 4th one in Resi 5's case) was brilliant but playing the same game as before only in a slightly different location does not make a good or interesting game

But people who haven't played Resident evil 4 (and may you smack youselves with a wet paper dinosaur for not) will find it refreshing and cool.

Resident Evil 4 is considered by many to be one of the best games ever made. What franchise wouldn't capitalize off of it and make more of the same? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The loyal will buy it, and the newcomers to gaming will experience it for the first time. With a little touches of love here and there, they can perfect the formula, but I don't think anyone expected a major overhaul. Too much risk is involved when you have the sure bet sitting right in front of you.

I presume the one bloke who called the game a "revolution" was either jokeing or has not played 4 (seriously where have you been?)

After playing it, neither - no revolution, and it is similar to RE4 but to me, RE5 isn't even as good as RE4 - so I can't really say "remake". Despite how similar the two are.

As for revolution, this game breaks no ground, not even for the RE series.

Never played an RE game before the 4th, but RE4 was awesome. I called an "issue" with it way before I got my hands on it though. You would be way too powerful and the game wouldn't be very scary, and I was pretty much right. There were some creepy parts though (the bodybag still creeps me out... *shudder*)

RE5 seems like more of the same. It'll still be a good game, but unless they have something truly creepy and not a quick cheap scare, then it will be even less of a horror game than 4. I don't think you can call it revolutionary no matter what unless a co-op horror game has that much of an impact.

I believe the word was dropped a few times at E3 and a few times again at one of your local game-award shows. It was nominated for several awards, including best game and best boss (El Lago).

But that's a bit besides the point, I suppose -- point taken; for you, it wasn't much of a revolution. I can definitely respect that. It has been stated that it was just a costumed action/adventure, and that is very much true.

Gotta say, after reading Adam Sessler's review and playing the demo for a grand total of two hours, the game was a dramatic disappointment. It hardly moved forward at all. Like the Sess said, there's nothing wrong with incorporating newer gameplay elements from the past 5 years.

I don't know how you can say that RES 4 was the begining of the end for SH games when Dead Space has been such a success. Also was RES 4 really that different then the rest? Besides better graphics and better AI it is basically the same game.
