I don't know about you guys, but Chrono Trigger was one of my favorite games on the Super Nintendo. I was watching today's new episode of Extra Credits (don't know if referencing EC results in a death sentence on the forums), and Dan brought up the point that nearly all of Square Enix's immediate focus was only on Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest while other great franchises were sitting on the shelf. He made mention to a few and then emphasized the absolute need for a new Chrono game, saying that we as consumers are ready for one after twelve years.

However, I recall hearing that Square Enix was willing to start working on the Chrono franchise again but was only willing to take the risk if the people desired it. The way they tested this desire was with the re-release of Chrono Trigger on the DS... and the result didn't live up to their expectations. Apparently, while the sales figures for DS Chrono were moderately nice, they weren't what Square Enix was hoping for, thus leading them to the decision that another Chrono game wasn't worth their time sinking their time into the bigger cash cows like Final Fantasy.

So essentially, I take that as Square Enix saying we aren't ready for a new Chrono game.

Well... I am. Are you guys? I mean, what do you think about all of this? Square Enix doesn't seem interested in making a new game unless they're absolutely sure we want one.

Come on. A new Chrono game would be hated. Why? It wouldn't live up to what everyone has built Trigger and Cross up to. Lets be honest. When has a beloved game from ten or more years ago got a sequel over a decade later and that sequel was as loved as the original? Any? None? Okay.

That's how I see it as well. Fans are going to be disappointed and people who weren't interested in the original won't suddenly start liking the new game. And if they try to pander too much to the fans it probably won't bring in new blood, either.

Not under square's current management. If they gave the rights to Mist Walker, then fuck yes I would. You know what, that would be a good start at reparations from square. Anyone else want to start a petition to make them relinquish the rights to Chrono Trigger?

I don't know if I'd want a home console version. I think a handheld only version a la Dragon Quest IX would be awesome though.

Not 'til after I play Chrono Cross.
Or until I finish Trigger. I've had that game since the PS1 port was released, never finished it. It's a good game, but it's definitely one that people have built up through nostalgia. I'm a bit of an anomaly, though; my favorite JRPGs are all either 8 bit era games or throwbacks to the 8-bit era, and are mostly Dragon Quest games.

Edit: And my love of 8-bit JRPGs isn't nostalgia, because I wasn't even born when most of them came out. I think Dragon Quest IV may have been released a year or two after I was born, but my first RPG was FF VII, and my early gaming experiences were mostly 8 and 16 bit platformers.

I think handheld is the way to go for most JRPGs.

I'd like a remake of Chrono Trigger with HD graphics and improved combat. As for a modern squeenix JRPG with the "chrono" name on it, no thanks. Those guys haven't made a game I like since the PSone.

MEH..

Don't get me wrong, I love CT...like FF6 more...but I'd rather have CC with PS3/PSV graphics.

CT is a GREAT game, but CC was just more 'fun'.
