Which do you prefer?

I'm not talking about graphics here, im talking about storylines, weapons and enemies.

For instance no one can look at the combine or a headcrab zombie from half-life 2 then look at at their neighbour and say 'I see no difference'. Unless of course their neighbour has a strange attraction to gas masks or has their chest ripped open.

Personally I prefer non-realistic. Realism is ok as far as it goes, but I play games to get away from life, I enjoy shooting weird aliens with magnums and clubbing away strange people in weird suits of armor.

How about you guys?

I don't care if spiders jump out your ass or if your physics are perfect as long as the game follows the equation Game = Fun x Awesome

Unrealistic. Evil Zone will always have a special place in my heart for allowing me to, in a one-on-one fighting game, lock my opponent in place and fire an orbital cannon at them...

...And that's not even a finishing move.

I think realism is a little like the uncanny valley, the more we get closer to it, the more we find unrealistic faults. Like FarCry 2's absurd reloading. Theres a bullet in the chamber, I shouldn't have to cock it again.

But a game like say Halo, well its future stuff can do whatever they want.

A mix - take the Call of Duty series as an examples - regenerating health, being able to take 2 bullets to the head without dying, the way many of the guns fire - all unrealistic.

Yet the gameplay is realistic in terms of physics, movement, and character abilities.

Mixed.
A realistic story is a a good thing. If I can poke a hole in the story it ruins the game/movie for me, which is why I thought the Iron Man movie sucked. Other then the story, I don't care if a gun shoots rainbow colored hearts that cause enemies to sing and dance "I'm a little tea pot" before having their eyes explode followed by the spontaneous combustion of their bodies.

Realistic. Because there are so few realistic games around, you can probably count them on one hand, and even then half of them would be mods.

But it really depends on what kind of game you are making, a realistic single shooter would be a crazy idea, like going lone eagle on Rainbow games on the highest difficulty.

I enjoy an even mix. Saints Row 2 was great in the unrealistic realm, while GTA IV was pretty realistic. I love both of those games and enjoy playing each for it's own reasons.

I like realism things such as
1. Every action has a reaction
2. Bullets will kill you 5 bullet max will put you down, if shot in the chest.(Mix of real and unreal I know)
3. Something were you do real things like I dunno be a terrorist or something...could make a good game! Not that I support terrorism, I just support games where you can be one.

Unrealism Elements I like
1.Stuff like Path of Neo did, minus the flying. Bending the rules of reality.
2. It can be sci-fi, JRPGs are okay.
3. Special abilities.

I HATE OVERLY LARGE SWORDS!

i like my games to have no resemblance to reality. Why play something that is exactly like real life? its like going to a 5 star restaurant and ordering a poorly made McDonald's cheese burger. Video games are much like fictional books and movies in that they are escapes from reality, designed to take realism and convention and hurl them out of a 10 story building. take phychonaughts and portal, how are these games realistic in any way? phychic children and portal weilding test subjects. this is what more games need.

you bring up a good point that shooters could use a little realism, but not get too carried away. Call of Duty would be a good example if it wasnt for its regenerating health. ill bring up left 4 dead for health but in that game no one is shooting you. (except for your dick head friends) so who knows how much damage someone would sustain from a zombie slash.

a shotgun blast to the face will only result in 5-20 damage depending on difficulty. why doesent something like that kill you instantly. BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T BE FUN! the reason damage in FPS's are so messed up is because if the bullet damage was realistic then you would be dying every other minute. thats why you get bionic suits or whatever.

if there was a realistic FPS that had realistic bullet damage, no one would buy it cause you would go down with one hit.

Mostly unrealism. I found some realistic gameplayaspects of far cry 2 to be fun, but most of the time I go for the unrealistic games. Like sports and driving games. I would take burnout 3 or the ssx series anytime over all the other stuff out there.

I'm gonna say mixed, though more on the unrealistic side.
The thing is, reality is boring. Part of the reason I don't like first person shooters is because if I really wanted to, I could take a gun and shoot everything in site. I will never, however, be able to control a mouse that shoots electricity out of its face. This is because I'm zoophobic. The fact that there are no electric mice probably helps contribute to that too.

At the same time, my suspension of disbelief can only go so far, which is why I don't like Superman.
Baby from space? Okay.
Superpowers? Okay.
Nobody figuring out his secret when he takes off his glasses and changes his hair, despite being surrounded by ace reporters? Not okay.
Kryptonite, a chunk of meteor from a planet millions of light years away, being more common than shit in a septic tank? NO.

There are limits.

You know, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl had realistic bullet damage, and it rests proudly among my "Best Games in the Universe."

It's not the dying and the health that makes a game not fun, it's what it feels like when you die. If it feels like you got cheated, it's not fun, if it feels like you died because you blundered into something like an idiot, it's fun. It keeps you on your toes, and forces players to think realistically about what they do.

You also have to remember that if a game makes the player mechanics different, the enemies will be different, too. It goes both ways. So yeah, you would go down easily, but there would also not be hordes of enemies, and the enemies that are there would go down just as easily as you do.

I like realistic games. I don't like not having to think ahead, strategise, or pick my fights carefully. I also don't like the idea of an entire game consisting of circle-strafing and shooting, which seems to be what unrealistic shooters end up as usually. I also think I like realistic games for the reason I like realistic movies. When a game (or movie) goes too easy and doesn't act serious, I feel like I'm not getting the full story. It always feels like everything I do is just some sort of joke.
