Hey guys,
With it being the Halloween weekend I thought we should do a wee bit of a discussion on modern horror films.
Over the past couple of years I have found that most movies tend to attempt to scare you with copious amounts of gore and death.
Recent examples of decent films were the paranormal activity series (good pacing if not slightly annoying)and a tale of two sisters (korean horror film).

What is your opinion of horror films , which do you find scariest and why?

Supernatural stuff reaks me out more than plausable stuff. Gore isn't really creepy I find, rather, haunted house type stuff.

And your avatar is awesome.

Gore are the worst type of "horror" movies ever made. The movies that keep it classy and to a minimum and focus more on the suspense and build up of the shock are always the most successful movies. However i prefer the horror movies that make you think and try and fuck with your head.
Paranormal Activity which you mentioned has scared me shitless with both movies (more with the first however because with the second one, while scary, was somewhat predictable as you knew from the first) One because they build up the suspense and you KNOW something will happen and you try brace yourself but you dont know when or how it will happen and two because i have a nervous disposition.
Also, Fuck the SAW movies.

If you liked A Tale of Two Sisters, you should see Pulse.
Scary shit.

[REC] is the God of modern horror, if not all horror.
I totally agree with you on REC, epic spanish film, have you seen the orphanage? creepy as hell!

But damn, WHAT A TWEEEEEEEEST!

Really though, see Pulse.[/quote]

The film wasnt that scary until the twist i thought, then it just became a horrible situation

Modern "mainstream" horror has become pretty mundane. Not all bad, just milked to the point of annihilation.

Foreign horror is were the good stuff is at though. Martyrs, R-Point, [REC], Tale of Two Sisters and loads more that have escaped my brain.

I'm not trolling, but where in earth is realism in horror? Usually realism would kill the horror, like if the main chracter would act upon the situation and not run away falling down (yes, the running away in a panic works always) all the time. Well I quess every horror movie character just is stupid. But the worst way to kill horror is ultra non-realistic gore.

I voted for build up. And second thing is soundtrack from these options. If you play Benny Hill chase music on the background, any movie could be ruined.

I think French horror is where it's all going down at the moment. You've got Martyrs, Haute Tension (or Switchblade Romance in the US/UK), A l'interieur and Frontiere(s), all of which are mind-shatteringly amazing horror films.

I voted for pacing as the scariest thing, but honestly a good bit of horrifying gore can do the trick too. You need a combination of all things to make an actual scary movie methinks.

Koreans make the scariest horror movies known to man.
Personally, I think they shit all over Japanese horror (as of recently), but that's just my opinion.

Silent films? the original nosferatu (1920's) was apparently rather terrifying in its time and don't believe that had sounds, just german words :p

^ It's funny because you said this with a Rocky Horror Picture Show avatar, which is awesome :)
on topic, however, pacing pacing pacing. The Omen I have seen too many times and whenever that chick hangs herself it still gives me chills. Nowadays though, I'm not really sure, paranormal activity was alright, but nothing mindblowing that I have seen in a while.

If A Nightmare on Elm Street didn't have cheesy 80's synth pop going on in the background, I believe it would have been significantly better.

I watched the "A nightmare on elm street" series when I was a younger lad, not remotely scary and towards the end of the series I thought freddy was a it of a joke. Remake was rubbish too.

"True terror is not in the moment, but in the anticipation."

Which is why 90% of modern horror (hell, modern movies in general) really suck.

Does such a thing exist anymore?

I'm pretty jaded by the horror industry of late, mostly because it is saturated with remakes and sequels. Recent horror contains too much blood and not enough scare; I consider gore to be disgusting, not scary, which to me is not the point of horror.

I've found myself watching Japanese horror more recently, as they seem to enjoy mindfucks more than OOGA BOOGA! factor.
Dude just watch the movies I posted about. They exist

Films aren't scary - not when you use your head. It's all make-up and actors.

The only time I've felt a little intensity was during Martyrs, when the girl in Lucy's head was attacking her in the bathroom.
Man, are you a killjoy. I feel kind of sorry for you.

Well think of it this way; nightmares aren't realistic either yet they're still scary.

you're polls kinda misleading. you know a bit of all of it to make a "great horror film".

Tht being said, i enjoyed Stephen King's IT most.

But thats a crappy example, so I'll give a general overview. I enjoy horror films that dont rely just on blood and guys. I like ones that screw with your head, ones that make you fill in blanks and scare yourself more then rely on some buxom air headed blonde get cut open after clearly displaying how much of a slut she is. So that relies on a bit of everything. Pacing so its nice and ramps up at your pace instead of rushing, gore so you know what will happen, but not something that you saw on screen. environment (whihc is realistic expereience and music) because it gets you in the mood where you feel comfy (since good horror rips you form a comfrot zone with all the fine skill of a first time cook gutting and stuffing a thanksgiving turkey), and some kinda thing that is alluded to but never really seen because when you see it you know it, where in your mind it festers and grows, turning everyday things into something truly horrific.

Is there any actual recent "horror" films? Or are they all just movies based on "suspense" that happen to have a monster/killer/crazy dude? I think newer movies have trouble distinguishing "scary" from "suspense." I think games have passed movies in the area of scary. Silent Hill 2, genuinly scary. Saw XX, not scary, suspensful.
