Well, I've finally desided to buy an old retro console so I can play some of the classics of gaming. The only problem is I cant deside which. All of them go for similar prices on Ebay, so I really cant pick. Here a list of the ones I want to get and the games I would really like on them:

NES: LoZ, Super mario bros, Megaman, Castlevania.
SNES: only Castlevania 4 really.
Nintendo 64: Mario 64, Ocarina of time and Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Goldeneye.

As you can see they are all Nintendo, seeing as I dont like the look of the Genesis or Atari. Also, just because 64 has longest list of games would like, I kinda want the NES ones more.

I suggest SNES just for the sake of longevity. The NES cartridges are unreliable, and the N64 controllers suck, unfortunately.

SNES is cool, NES looks way the best (with the sexy square controllers), and N64 has some pretty good games...

I'd take the SNES, it's my favourite of the three (I own all of them). I'd also recommend looking in car boot sales for stuff if possible, because the amount of awesome retro stuff I've picked up there is ridiculous. (Try an Atari Lynx with 6 games for a pound (!))

Of those, my favourite is the N64, but really, it depends on what kind of games you like, and they've all got their strengths and weaknesses.

N64 is most definitely the best multiplayer console of all of them though. May I suggest Conker's Bad Fur Day and Majora's Mask as another couple of great N64 games if you do decide on that.

I voted the SNES simply because it has a very diverse and well rounded library of awesome games. Super Metroid, Link to the Past, Super Mario World 3, you know, the classics.

Get a clone system like the Retro Duo or something like that. That way you can play NES and SNES games. Sure theres a few games not compatable, but 99% of them are and the clone systems cost about $30-$50 and work as good as a top loader did brand new.

SNES has Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger.

But instead of buying a NES or a SNES, I also suggest emulation. Why bother with hardware when you can have a just-as-good virtual version?

I'd get the SNES. Not only can you get Super Castlevania IV, which is amazing, but don't forget you can also get a hold of some of Nintendo's greatest games - Chrono Trigger, Earthworm Jim, Zombies Ate My Neighbours, Smash TV, Kirby Super Star, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles In Time, Contra III, MegaMan 7, MegaMan X, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario World (1 and 2), The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country (1 and 2), Final Fantasy VI, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana and Super Metroid all come to mind.

By all means, weigh up your options against the NES and the N64, both of which have some incredible games, but I'd personally go for the SNES.

*sigh*

It's just not the same. I love my emulators, but I want my hard copies. Maybe it's even a little ego thing. Like, "Haha, I have the REAL version".

The NES and N64 are all great on their own, but you schould get the SNES.

The N64 controller ´s analog stick tends to get broken kind of fast and most of it ´s games arent that attractive (to me) anymore. Pick its raisins (Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64,Star Fox 64...) on the VC. If you consider getting a NES, then be warned that most of its games are very hard. The original Zelda and Metroid is for example are very tough and vague compered to what to might got used to these days. I also think the Wii ´s VC already has most of the good ones. Most NES games cant save or only has passwords. Beeind able to freeze them on the VC is a god send.

The SNES is a nice balance between retro and playability. Many games like Super Metroid, Yoshis Island or Secret of Mana kept their value, so be prepared to pay prices beyond 20$ for them. You can also get a Super Gameboy and play every (non-color) game in a very comfort way.

PS: playing the games authenticly is pro and more fun ;)
