Poll: Roleplaying Opposite-Sex Characters

I hadn't intended that at all. And I say this without having taken any offense.

Well good, because I certainly didn't mean any offense.

Still, the fact that there's only one person out of the whole group that has even said anything, I'd say that his mindset is pretty rare.

I'm not really sure how to phrase my opinions on this matter, because I've had this same discussion on far less... civilized forums.

Because we want to assert the fact that we aren't homosexual for wanting to play a female character.

At least, that's my guess.

Not sure how playing a female character in a game could possibly translate into homosexuality, but... okay.

Realistically? It doesn't. But realistically? People aren't always realistic.

Considering most game protagonists are male, I've had no choice on many occasions XD But no, I don't see a problem with it unless the players are just making characters simply for the sex appeal. (This applies to BOTH genders)

I have no doubt that the characters have something to with my subconscious desires. I'd love to spend a week with my Shadowrun character despite the fact that she's tailored to be a heartless ***** and a cold-blooded killer.

So i had this friend i used to play D&D with, and he had a female rogue with a ridiculously high charisma score. We would go into shops/inns where he/she would proceed to seduce the shop keep, lure him somewhere secure, knock him out then rob him blind. I always thought it was kinda creepy...

I do this a lot when creating characters for RPG games. I suppose it's because it's easier to detach from a female character and see it as HER story, than it is when creating male characters, where I tend to project MYSELF a little too much to create the illusion of it being someone else's story.

Also, if you're gonna be staring at you character's butt for 30-50+ hours, then I personally prefer to stare at a type of butt I find pleasing to look at. XP!

There's also this. Maybe part of the reason it's so common for men to roll women characters is simply due to the fact that there's an overabundance of male characters in just about every game.

That's exploitation of a skill. Albeit, I'd rather play a female rogue that intimidates the shop keeper rather than seduce him. The knocking out thing is funny, and it is a bit weird but that's how he wanted his character to operate.

I find that I can project myself into the place of either a male or female protagonist. If I ever ask myself why I play a female character, the best answer I can formulate is "to be different." Male gunslingers are a easy to come by. Female gunslingers I don't see much of in games.

For males, it's the general suave goody-doer.

Never really been able to role-play otherwise. :s

I know I had to do it multiple times. the first time cause we needed a female character, and cause I was one of the admins in the game, I had to play her, as well as my male character. Since then, I've done it just for fun, and when I do TWEWY rps, I'll constantly have my two person team be one male, and one female.

Its like the guys that play pokemon games as the girl, or vice versa. you just want to be different.

You could really ask the same question about playing a different race colour then you are.

I play the least feminine female characters I can. A female dragonborn paladin whose day job is acting as the inquisitor of the church, for example. Or a chain-smoking, foul-mothed gun-for-hire.

dont know much about D&D but really, its jsut like following a charachter in any other type of fiction

in RPG's I dont ofen do it only becuse there are enough male protagonists in games and I can relate to a female more

That's how I like to run my characters. Ask my Shadowrun character if she'd like to go home from the bar with you and she's probably shoot you in the foot. Get her drunk, ask her again, and you'll lose an eye.

id idnt say it had to make you feel feminine. Just it lets me get out a more caring nature. I'll usually run a mage/healing type mother figure who overs kindly and morally right advice that the characters of even the toughest metal can grow to like before dying somewhere after the half way point to make the party's resolve and connection to one another stronger.

well, as long as you dont start dressing in cosplay as one of your female characters, why should there be a problem? I dont do D&D (as in tabletop RPGs), but I do make female characters in videogame RPGs on occasion. My friend does the same thing. In some cases, its actually quite amusing to see a guy roleplaying a female character in a tabletop game (again, I dont do tabletop, but one time I was with my friend and his RPG buddies, and I watched. Needless to say, lots of Mountain Dew and lulz were had...)

I don't have such a hard time projecting myself into female characters, as I have difficulty AVOIDING doing so for male ones (Sorry if that was unclear). I like making stories and personalities for RPG characters (after playing through the game the first time), but I have a tendency to copy myself too much when creating male ones. I suppose what I'm getting at is that it's easier for me to play a character whose background and personality is different from mine, when the gender is different too (An alien concept from the very beginning).

Though, I have to admit, despite being able to imagine "the female me", it's not as easy as when playing male characters (Who I usually design after myself for the first run-through of an RPG, and explore the story as myself).

Nothing wrong with it, I think. I see it as a challenge, above all else. After all, a man doesn't know how a woman thinks for sure and vice versa.
