I've been wondering- do more people prefer to create themselves in RPGs, or create an entirely new persona for the game? I personally tend to make my characters resemble and act like the real me as much as I can, I guess because it makes me feel more connected to the game I'm playing, but that's just me. This also applies to games that merely let you name the main character(s), do you use your name or use others. Thoughts?

*Note: If this thread already exists under another name, I couldn't find it so I created this one.

When I was a kid I used to project myself onto the main characters or if possible recreate myself but now Im older I tend to try and create whole new character concepts. Not sure what that says about me as a person :p

Not usually, no.

For instance, in Fallout New Vegas, I have a female character, it helps distance myself enough so that I can roleplay as her, rather than roleplay as myself. That way, I don't feel as guilty for making decisions that I wouldn't have (plus, it's awesome to play a female sniper).

In the upcoming Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim, I'll most likely play a female assassin type. Mostly because of the roleplay element, and a little bit because, hey, women are sexier assassins than men.

It probably stems from my desire to create interesting characters, rather than project myself onto a blank slate, that's why I find characters like Master Chief and Gordon Freeman stupidly boring.

My first play-through of games I create a character, I try to make them as close as possible in each game, a female mage with bright pink hair who is a klepto. My second play-through I create myself.

The first time I play a game that allows for complete customization, I start as myself. That makes decisions easier as I don't have to think about "what would my character do?"

Any subsequent playthroughs will always have a different kind of character because I refuse to repeat myself. EVER.

I Kinda do both in a way the character is BASED upon me but if I have lived a different life, so while the character has quite a few of my traits depending on what i decide their life was like can seriously change it also I do try to develop the character throughout to give them an evolving personality.

i try to recreate my face and my character acts like me, just a lot less witty and sarcastic most of the time. He also usually is more of an asshole since he can back up his pissing people of with mad gun skills are throwing fireballs.

New, different characters always. I've never seen the point in basing my character in RPGs around me, in fact it seems to defeat the point. An actor is only acting when they're playing a role (or roleplaying, as it is sometimes known), not when they're being themselves.

New character. I mean, I'm a guy but all my RPG characters tend to be girls. With a tan I will never obtain, gorgeous ponytail/shorter hair and a wellformed D-cup.
