So I just watched the new Final Fantasy XIII trailer, and I finally managed to put my finger on something that's been bugging me about the battle gameplay: does it seem to anyone else like there's kind of a lot of stuff cluttering up the screen? There's the main menu that takes up almost the entire bottom third of the screen, some more numbers up in the top-right corner, the little graphs floating over the bad guys' heads, and when you move in to attack, loads of unnecessarily large numbers pop up in that Terminator-font right on top of the action, often obscuring what's going on.
And yes, I know that RPGs in general (and FF in particular) have had all that stuff on the screen for a while now and it's traditional and all that noise. I'm just saying, now that technology has advanced to the point where games look more super-awesome than ever, why not shrink some of the numbers and graphs and such down and get them out of the way so that we can enjoy the view? Like what I assume are the little health bars over the enemies' heads--there's no reason those couldn't be up along the top edge of the screen. Also, if you have health bars, then you don't need numbers popping out of people, do you?
Just a thought.
