After for years of faithful service, my 360 finally decided that it did not want to live anymore. I turned it on to play Rock Band 2 with my friends but all I got was the notorious red ring of death. Anyway, I'm trying to decide what to do. I want another 360. My friend just bought a new powerful computer and pirates everything now so he says he'll sell me his for $50 bucks (it's in great condition). Should I buy the brand new one which costs $250? Or should I just buy a new Xbox arcade version ($150) and attach my old hard drive to it?

Also, does the red ring of death affect the hard drive or are all of my game saves still in good condition?

I know 5 people who got Red Ring since December. You can buy and hope the new slim wont die on you, but its still likly. If you go PS3 then you are starting from ground zero but have a total new and mroe reliable machine.

No, RROD should not have impacted your HD, unless you raged on your Xbox when it red ringed on you!

You should probably take your buddies and maybe save for a PS3

Well, If were to forget the poll I would say "copy your friend" (apart from that pirating bit)

Commiserations man.

I have yet to be ring raped and I'm trading in mine for a slim this week so hopefully it won't die in the next week... you never know with Microsoft.

I did read somewhere that the new slim has a mechanism that shuts it down if it starts to overheat. Still... Microsoft do tend to talk a ot of bullshit.

Here's hoping!

Take your buddies option.

Then punch him in the face

You know, because of the pirating and stuff.

If he did that then he would have wasted money with all of his 360 games, plus he would have to buy more game. I say buy the xbox from your friend. If its in good condition I see no reason why you shouldnt.

I don't really get it, I have an XBOX 360, one of the models that are supposed to fail... but it has been working for over 2 years, no problem, just last night I was playing Alan Wake. I guess I was the lucky one =)

On topic: Get the new model.

I would recommend that you follow this good man's advise. He seems to know what he is talking about.

I've only been RROD'd once, and all I did was nip out to the shops, buy an Arcade, and stick my Elite hard drive into it. I wouldn't want to buy a second hand 360 in case it had been owned by a troll and locked out of XBL.

Obvious flame post is obvious.

The new slim is made from the new chipsets that came out in November of 2008. Failure rates for all 360 models manufactured after this date are well within target ranges. If your friend's has a manufacture date later than November 2008, consider it. Otherwise, check out the slim, it's a pretty good deal and they've got a nice combo pack coming out with Halo: Reach.

P.S. Your hard drive should be fine, and you can get free cables to transfer the data to a new hard drive.

Hmm, good point, I didn't think of that. Probably should check with your friend first. If he's a pirate chances are he hacked his 360 and got banned.

When mine RROD'd I sent it into Microsoft and (admittedly, a very, very long time later) they sent me back a brand new one, which works brilliantly. Its worth a try if Microsoft are still fixing RROD'd 360s.

You better hope becauase...

With the release of the redesigned Xbox 360 S, the warranty for the newer models do not include the three-year extended coverage for "General Hardware Failures"
