I think that too many RTS's are focusing on either slow base building (Age of Empires) or are too focused on hardcore heart-pounding speed (Halo Wars); they don't strike a good balance. Starcraft, Warcraft, and the original Dawn of War are the only games I can think of that made a good balance between speed and base building.

I have played Supreme Commander almost every day since 2007.

Actually not getting my hopes too much for the second as it looks like they've changed the gameplay and style a bit too much but I'll always love the first.

Holy fuck!?! I gotta try this I will be buying it on steam as soon as I get some money
Thank you very much for the advice
Hearts of Iron 3 you mean?

Glad I could be of service :p (I pirated it since I can't wait for the (overseas) delivery to arrive wednesday >.> but it seems cool so far if you don't count the patch fixable stuff. One game can easily take over 40 hours if not more :D)
40 hours? What the hell, I might just sell my soul and live on this game
Now shush and let me continue my advance into Spain (after conquering France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Holland with my German and Italian friends ;)) (Never thought Swiss people could take on the Spaniards)(In retrospect maybe they were just terribly equipped..)

Well you can't really take over the world on your own (unless you are the Soviet Union or USA that is) but you can do it with your faction. For example if you play Germany and start at 1936 you can try to influence certain nations to come closer to the Axis. If you'd do this to the USA and Brazil for example and succeed you've come a long way already :)

One annoying thing is that if you are in the Axis and declare war to for example the Phillipines, they automatically join the Allied forces.

The genre as a whole is going downhill, chasing after graphics and frequently not realizing that a more complicated game does not necessarily have more complex strategy. It used to be great, though. (man I wish Vista didn't fail at backwards compatibility)

I find WC3 TFT is the best time waster thanks to fun custom maps.

Good lord I hope SC 2 will have a lot of maps like it, or WC4 will come out someday.

I never found much fun in the normal game online (campaign is fun) because youd have to practise and make tactics and in the end invest way too much time.

If blizzard decides to ever actually release starcraft 2 instead of making a god damn poker set, the RTS genre would be just as hip as FPS. Until then, people are playing WOW.

But seriously, why isn't SC2 done yet? It was announced 2 years ago, with a fully working engine. They already had the hard part done, no reason why they should take this long for the rest of it. At least they should know the release date instead of giving us "Early 2010" which actually means Christmas 2010

It is just a shame that not other RTS will ever live up to the glory that the Warcraft series has established. You remember those games don't you? It was that during that time before Blizzard started putting out the mindless dribble that is WOW.
Age of Empires own Warcraft tbh
Yes, that is very true, if you are a bland accountant with no sense of fun. Being more fluid and faster paced, puts Warcraft way ahead of Age.

I have to disagree even though Warcraft did come out first it just isn't as great as Ages of Empires.

my favorite game is c&c generals and its expansion love teh GLA and there demo bombs and the hilarious workers "i want some shoes" "thank you for the shoes"

I want a new one that actually involves tactics, not "make powerful unit and lots of and kill" forumla that most rts have
yeah i hear you like terrain and flanking bonuses i think i remember playing a demo with something like that

i also would like to see the firs person perspective combined with a real time strategy i dont know how it just seems like a good idea to me

also the empire earth series has gone down hill in my opinion

My favourite RTS of all time: Warcraft 3
My current favourite RTS: Anno 1404
But most new RTSes that arn't heavily based on building, massive armies (Like Anno 1404 or Total war) are starting to piss me off because of the hit-and-run thing is very overused.

I was never into RTSs, but I loved Sins of a Solar Empire, one of my all time favorite games. I also really enjoyed DoW1, great game.
Never could get into AoE or Supreme Commander though.

Red Alert seiries are the best in my opinion, but I'm worried that EA are ruining it...
How so? The series has always been about goofy, over-the-top stories (hmm... time travel, mind control, battles on the moon...) and terrible, hammy acting (I don't know who plays the president in Yuri's Revenge, but he's a great example). And it's awesome for it. In my eyes, it's gotten progressively better.
I've heard EA messed up the balance in CAC3, which leavs my paranoid about RA3. Since it sounds like you've played, are my worries muisguided?
Well Red Alert 3 is fuckin awesome just play it and don't get a console version.

I agree. But if its going to be Empire-Building, they should at least make it more of a simulation, AoE just doesn't do it right. I see Halo Wars as an introduction to RTS'.
