So far: Eldred's first mission was for Persephone, who had him settle a violent dispute that had broken out between the gnomes in Pellanon. Next he did a task for Pyro, travelling to Urghaz, home of the trolls, and banishing the wizard there so that Pyro's henchmen could abduct the troll infants. Now, we work for Stratos, who sends Eldred to Surtur's Keep.
Now this one's a long one, so I'll add a written summary of the events for those who'd rather not watch the videos.
Level beginsELDRED: Stratos' champion Abraxus set out immediately to attack Pyroboria, sparing little time for a reunion with here husband, who had but recently returned from his imprisonment.
So, the level begins. This mission brings with it a new spell and a new unit: freeze, which is pretty self explanatory (it freezes the target in place) and the Squall, a great big bird like creature with a long ranged attack that knocks the target back.STRATOS:Our faint has provoked an attack by Pyro, exactly as I had anticipated. The other gods are such children.
Lord Surtur will gladly lead your charge.
LORD SURTUR: Return to me, my lady. I have lived too long in your absence.
No sooner than I've made my first manalith we're attacked by a group of troll-like creatures sporting large gas masks and flaming fists. I hadn't even summoned any creatures yet, aside from my manahoars (they're those little guys with the smoking heads. They transfer mana from manaliths to the wizard.) Luckily, we have Lord Surtur with us, and he's just a great big mountain of kick-ass, so in fairly short order the creatures are all dead.
I think the Thestor part was a mix-up, since if I recall correctly the gnome's name was Festus. Thestor is his brother, who we saw in mission one.ELDRED: No doubt these firefists are the result of that gnome Thestor's appearance in Urghaz.
Anywho, after converting the firefists' souls I summoned a few rangers and a second Squall and moved over the nearest hill. Sure enough, right on the other side is my enemy (one of them, anyway,) Empress Sorcha. Zyzyx says that she can be "overly cautious" but that seems to be the opposite of the case; she walks right up to my manalith and destroys it. Luckily, we manage to fight her off with minimal casualties on our side. After summoning a couple new rangers, we go on the offensive, destroying one of her nearby manalith and gaining a few souls. A little after our little skirmish is over, a cutscene is triggered.
So, the battle continues. Empress Sorcha continues to attack my base, but we continue to fight her off and before long I've stolen most of her souls. At this point I head straight for her altar. Unfortunately, Zyzyx informs me that Buta has defeated Abraxus, so once Sorcha's been dealt with I have to turn my attention on him.[Embassador Buta shows up, standing by his altar]
BUTA: Lady Abraxus thinks she's sooo smart. Well where is she now?
[Lady Abraxus appears before Eldred]
ABRAXUS: Buta has fallen into our trap.
ELDRED: I fear I have not yet banished the empress.
ABRAXUS: We shall battle them both then.
I desecrate Sorcha's altar with ease, seeing as how she has no creatures left and my army is now quite huge. Thankfully the map is divided into two sections that can only be traversed via a giant portal, so I haven't had to deal with Buta yet. After going through said portal, I'm surprised to find that he's erected manaliths on every mana fountain, including the one where Abraxus' altar once stood. After destroying a couple of them, Buta shows up with a surprisingly large force. We manage to fight him off, but a few shrikes and all my druids are killed. Lord Surtur himself nearly bit the dust.
Things don't get any easier as we get closer to Buta's altar. I keep summoning more druids but every time we fight they all wind up dead , so I give up on them. Besides, Lord Surtur's really the only melee creature I need. After a few more battles, we manage to get to Buta's altar. The desecration is surprisingly quick, over almost before it begins. Que cutscene.
And with that, the mission is over.[Eldred and Lord Surtur back at Eldred's Altar]
ELDRED: We are victorious!
SURTUR: [laughs] Your skill has proved too great for them!
ZYZYX: Then, Abraxus joined us.
[Abraxus appears]
[We watched the reunion]
ABRAXUS: You are too humble, my lord.
SURTUR: My lady!
ABRAXUS: Such humility is more befitting a prisoner than a regent.
SURTUR: [laughs] Too many years away from home have left me unaccustomed to the sweet timbre of your disapproval. Have you no kindnesses for me, my dear?
ABRAXUS: If it please my lord, return to our castle, and you shall see what, if any, kindnesses you merit.
Back in the realm of the godsLOADING SCREEN
MITHRAS: There have been other wars between the gods, some protracted and dreadful. Yet one truth had been constant: it was mortals who bore the suffering. The gods were bound by ancient ties, and none of them, not even Persephone or Charnel, had ever sought the others extermination.
JAMES: I know everyone's busy getting ready for the big war, but has anyone else noticed what Jadugar's been up to? I seen him all around the Glebe, rallying folk with talk of "the prophecy of Mithras," and some fellow "Ashur" who'll save 'em all.
PERSEPHONE: We must know more about this "Ashur."
JAMES: Well, I think I know where you can find Jadugar, but we'd best do something about Pyro and Charnel. They're allies now, you know.
STRATOS: Do as you think best. My forces will be available to defend wherever necessary.
NOTE: Who you choose will affect who we can play for later down the road. If you choose Persephone, James or Stratos, Pyro and Charnel will close their doors to Eldred, and vice versa.CHOICES:
PERSEPHONE:
"We must still direct the main of our force against those who wish to destroy us, yet we would know more about this "Ashur." Seek out Jadugar and discover what you can."
JAMES:
"Whatever Jadugar is up to, the best way to combat heretics is with a right proper godly display. I have been to passive; that don't quite inspire folk. It's time take back what's mine."
STRATOS:
"Persephone and James will be on the offensive. It falls upon me, therefore, to be ready to counter any assault Pyro or Charnel attempt. You could be particularly useful in this regard."
PYRO:
"It does not matter if what the worm says is true, no Ashur can threaten Pyro once the Pyro-draulic Dynamo is complete. To activate it we will need more slaves, but... I think James just volunteered to provide them!"
CHARNEL:
"The indignity! James actually suggested that this upstart, this "Ashur" could be a greater threat than the god of slaughter! Perhaps it will be necessary to subjugate this cult and restore everyone's faith in us, no?
