Actually, when I was younger, I found the first Dooms to be quite scary, when I was playing the SNES Doom, I said "OH SHIT" pretty loud and my father was near, reading a newspaper. Also, the PS1 Doom is quite scary as it have a very different soundtrack and the sounds of the monsters are scarier too, compared to the normal PC Dooms, I even use the sounds and music from the PS1 version on the PC version to make the game more scarier.

And not to mention Doom 64, that was the only Doom game I was too scared to actually finish the game. I eventually finished it a couple of years ago, but back in the day it was quite scary, I still gives me shivers whenever I hear the babies crying in the later stages of the game.
I still consider it the scariest official non-modded Doom yet, I even consider Doom 3 a joke compared to Doom 64.

Amnesia. The Dark Descent is the scariest I've played, I guess. I dunno why people get frightened early on though, it took an hour and a half for me to get actually scared and even then that was half surprise.

Maybe I've spent too much time playing games and not enough in reality.

The Island of the Dead mod for AvP2. That's some scary shit.

Most of the textures have been black-and-whited, other than the zombies and some decoys. Your weapon supply is intensely low, there's traps and broken things everywhere, the boat level is VERY cramped (so you have nowhere to run) and every now and then there'll be a screamer... it's awesome xD

Amnesia is the scariest fucking game I have ever played. And I have played nearly EVERY single horror game, ranging from Penumbra to Dead Space to Silent Hill to Clock Tower to Fatal Frame, and I've played all of them in those series'. Lights off. Middle of the night. When I was all alone. And nothing made me piss myself more than Amnesia. I don't know how, but that game got my goat more than anything. Maybe it was the fact that you were never givien any warning as to when you were going to be screaming your head off. Or maybe it was the fact that you could only run your ass off when you were filling your pants with the shit from the scare you just got.

Of the games on this list that I have played, I found Fatal Frame the scariest. Silent Hill was awesome, but I found it more creepy than scary. Based on these results, I now no longer have any excuse and must play Amnesia immediately!

You should really try lowering your bias when it comes to a poll and just be interested in the results, not trying to ignite something with "game is boring lolol."

It's called an opinion. Threads are for sharing opinions. To me, Dead Space is the least scary horror game I've ever played. If everyone who criticizes a game is trolling, then that would have to include over 95% of the community here.

Personally I thought the original Siren was incredibly scary (the beginning few levels at least...)

My friend owned the game and he and I played through the first few levels together (switching off every now and then) and quite honestly, between dying in two hits and not knowing where your enemies were save for the "sight-jacking" ability, I was quite afraid for my life most of the time.

I haven't played Amnesia yet, but I plan on doing so next time it goes on sale.

Stalker is fear in game form for me.

I find many horror games to actually hardly scare me. Condemned, Dead Space, and Resident Evil never even came close to scaring me, and all were very bland in my mind. I found the lack of ammo and the like annoying instead of causing me to feel desperate. Condemned I felt was just flat out terrible actually.

Stalker and Metro 2033 each do it for me though. Those are two games that I love playing simply because of how much they make me shriek. I remember one of my favourite moments from Stalker was early in the game. I was creeping through a village at night, and knew there were a couple enemies nearby. I peer out of the doorway, and slowly make my way down the street. The two eyes flash up in the darkness... Followed by three other pairs. Before I knew it, a swarm of mutant dogs were chasing me as I ran towards the nearest house, and hid in a corner with a shotgun aimed at the door. They circled that house for a few minutes before even attempting to enter. I was completely scared for the entire duration.

I've always been fond of the Thief series, probably because it's not actually a horror series and yet is renown for its horror elements. It's a game where you rely on shadows; shadows are your friend, they help you not be seen. You WANT to be in the dark. So when the game throws in supernatural elements suddenly you're suddenly forced into a tough position: You WANT to be able to see, but if you see they can as well... and in case the name wasn't a giveaway, Thief is about sneaking, not fighting, if you're spotted your chances of survival go -way- down.

It's an interesting mechanic. Helps that ten years running and Thief 1 and 2 still have some of the best sound-design out there. Sound technology really hasn't been advancing at the same pace of its visual brethren, which is a pity!

Other than that System Shock 2 is horrifying in a whole different way. It's a game that ramps up the tension slowly rather than that sort of in-your-face BOO scare pretty much every other game relies on, and frankly, SHODAN is one scary character. Probably the most memorable 'villain' of any game I've ever played.

I like scary games but find most of them not so much scary as just having instances of startlement. Fatal Frame was one of the few games I actually dreaded playing and I loved it!

Condemned
The first was scary because it was plausible, admitedly I only played the demo but walking through a messed up building with crazed drug addicts is something that could actually happen and that added a level of fear that other games lack.

Dead Space
Refuse to play this because the death scenes scare me too much. If I was gonna play it I'd have to be invincible or it would be too scary.

Resident Evil
As other people have said the regenerators in RE4 are terrifying. Killed one, turned around and right there was another one. So glad I crapped before playing so all there was was a loud fart.

Doom 3
Me and a friend were playing this at his house at night with the lights off. It was my turn to play and he was sitting in front of his bed watching me. When one of those hell knights put it's head through a door he lept off the ground and back onto his bed. When playing it in a normally lit room there is no fear aside from when things pop out at me unexpectedly but like Yahtzee said that's just easy horror.

Aside from those any game that features spiders is too scary. I tend to either use excessive force or find a cheat that lets me skip it.
