considering sci fi is limited, and fantasy is unlimited, there's clearly no contest.

Fantasy has Magic, Gods, Gods, Goddesses, more Gods, Demigods and demigoddesses. Oh, and Gods. Did I mention all the Gods?

Sci-fi can't beat Gods.

L'edito: Damn ninjas. Maybe I should spend less time per post typing the word Gods.
I refer you to Stargate.

Actually, I'm not sure. I mean Fantasy has dragons, chimeras, spells, demons and gods so at first it seems like the obvious choice. But on the other hand if you think about it, Sci-Fi has got enhanced warriors (Spartans, Jedi, etc), alien species that could probably take down most beasts of mythology (the zerg swarm comes to mind), and of course they have their own trump cards to use as well (Death Star (with a grating on that darn exhaust line!)).

I suppose you'd have to narrow it down a bit. Do you mean *Everything* from that realm of fiction working together (dragons demons and gods working together (or spartans zerglings and jedi) or just the "Heroes" or "Villains" of that setting? Are we referring to all materials in that setting or just video games?

If you were to limit it to the latter of each decision I'd put my money on Fantasy as most Sci-Fi heroes tend not to have quite the same level of armies and powers as Fantasy heroes do.

If you meant the former I have no answer except that it would make an interesting video game.

and that got me thinking what if the forces of Sci-Fi fought the the forces of Fantasy,I'm interested to see peoples opinions on this.
Fantasy takes an early lead in the ground battles, sci-fi retreats and glasses the planet from orbit...
Does the term, Glassing the planet come from Halo? I tried to google it and all the links were to Halo. Even on the large list of Planet Killers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_planet_killers

It went to Halo.

I say science because science can progress. They can make new devices to combat new things. Magic relies on old relics and as such has less adaptability and as Charles Darwin said "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one most adaptable to change."

Fantasy has Cthulhu. How is this even a contest?

Now, mind, I haven't read the books. But wasn't Cthulhu originally an alien that was so advanced that it was basically indiscernible from a dark god? I think this is one of those gray areas where SF and Fantasy overlap.

Cthulhu is clearly Sci-fi/fantasy leaning further to the sci-fi side.

Also, various sci-fi universes can also pull the god card.

Sci-fi can always pull in the aliens with God-like technology. Or Q. Q will do nicely.
Fantasy has Azathoth, he can do better.

If you're talking about grounded armies of equal number facing off against each other, I think I'd have to give the edge to Fantasy.

But after the Sci-fi team loses that battle they can retreat to their starships and nuke the battlefield from orbit.

You have to keep in mind that Sci-fi includes a lot of space-travel, where any Fantasy story stays on one world, or maybe have parallel dimensions (which Sci-fi also has) at best. On the grand scale, Sci-Fi can't lose. Fantasy settings don't have the means to travel into space and launch a grand attack on the Death Star, Enterprise, Citadel, or any other space station you care to name, while the Sci-fi side has more than the means to invade any fantasy planet it wants, and just destroy it if they can't conquer it.

Well...

Fantasy has the Magic, great warriors, God's and God Killers...

Sci-Fi has advanced technology, God-Like Races of Beings, and the potential to end the universe...

...but magic can end the universe too...

Gao-Gao, my head hurts...

You were saying?
Hey, what's the difference between the meteor that killed the dinosaurs and a KE bomb launched from my dreadnaught in orbit? Give up? There was only one meteor.

Something I want to say.

Science is NOT limited so far as we know, it can continuously adapt.

Magic is NOT limited either, so many of the best scenarios from that genre involve people being capable of devising new spells or discovering/creating new creatures.

Fantasy gods are never omnipotent I don't think. If they were, it wouldn't be much fun to read/play/watch. Same goes for technological weapons of mass destruction.

Some of the best works from both genres mix the two beautifully. Templars from Starcraft, Jedi from Star Wars, Engineers from Final Fantasy, and more.
