I'm thinking of learning some tutorials on making some small indie game and I was wondering which would be more efficient? The Source Development Kit (Valve Inc. Half-life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal) or the Unreal Development Kit? (Epic Games, and thousands of other games, includings Gears of War, Army of Two, Unreal Tournament, and Bioshock.) For texturing, mapping, and all the other fun stuff, so which should I pick?

While either engine can obviously produce a variety of excellent games UDK is, by a wide margin, the more common platform for professional developers. Few third party companies use source as the basis for a game but you can point to a half dozen major releases this year that relied on some variation of the Unreal engine.

I think unreal may be the way to go here. Source is a great engine, but it seems like all anyone does with it are mods for Half Life 2 or CS:S. At least with Unreal, you can create something a bit more original.

In my opinion while the Source Engine would be useful to learn, I think since Unreal is more widely used it would be a great one to start learning. After that maybe learn the Source engine. That's just my two cents right there I will not claim to be an expert
