Poll: Second Life?

I tried it out, found it confusing, and left. 'nuff said.

Unfortunately, this was also my experience. I may give it another try one day, but my first try was a definite put-off.

Well this fell away fast, didn't it? You're lucky I'm bored at 3:25 and trawling past page 2 to dig it up.

I played SL for a long time. I actually got addicted to it. It was immensely freeing during the angsty period I went through in which I felt completely ignored and helpless. In SL, no-one has to know who you are, so you can be what you want to be. I, for example, spent almost 3 years on there whilst underage, and no-one either asked nor guessed it of me.

As for the actual gameplay, it's boring as hell unless you make something to do for yourself. I built stuff with the content creation tools, and I was damn good at it, made a few dozen real-life pounds out of it, although I missed out on the big pay-out because I deleted my account before taking the money off. Over £300, I think it was. Ugh, hindsight.

Yeah, there's a lot of weird stuff, probably because there's a lot of people with anonymity, and the ability to do/become whatever you like. As a general rule on there, it's not acceptable to try and delve into someone's real life. It's just not done, so don't worry about that.

It's become much easier to avoid all the sex now, though, as the devs actually made a whole new adult continent which all of that stuff is being relocated to. You now have 4 or 5 continents altogether, and this new one is only accessible by those who have verified their age with the devs.

To be honest, though, there are very few jobs. The only real source of money is content creation, which you either can do or can't. If you can draw, animate, code, or model, you're set. If not, well, better get used to relying on the kindness of others.

Hell, I might as well answer any questions anyone has about it, since I seem to be the only person on these forums that's spent a lot of time on it.

OT: I spend a great deal of time on Second Life and it can be very damn fun. Unless you've got a low end computer. SL is HELL on low end comps. It eats up memory and everything is obscenely laggy. In the sims (areas) I usually visit I only get about 3-10 frames per second.

The sims I'm involved with however are great despite their lag. It's a massive role playing community based off Final Fantasy VII. The community is full of great people and is constantly growing. I'm quite proud to be a part of it really as it's one of the largest RP communities in SL.

That right there sir is something I find VERY creepy, how about yourself?

It's one of the reasons I haven't logged in for a month. The worst is when it gets combined with Role-Playing areas. There's an place called Obsidian, I believe, and.... well, I'd rather not go into detail, suffice to say it was very disturbing.

Good to know I'm not the only one. I like how everyone complains about the in-game currency somehow being worth less because it's just ones and zeros. What do you think your money really is? It's just as valid as any other currency, it's even recognised on the currency exchanges, just because there's no coinage doesn't mean it isn't valid.

I gave it a shot a year or two ago. I just didn't 'get it'. After flying around pointlessly for a while and attempting to get to grasp with the crappy controls and menu systems, I gave it up and uninstalled it permanently.

I heard a little bit about this a while ago. But I'm quite interested now. I think I might take a look at this teen SL cuz I'm only 16...

For that you'll need a way to verify your age.
As far as I know from some people who have been on both Grids, the Teen version is inferior to the Adult version, simply because the adult version has a lot of people making good-quality stuff for it. On the teen grid there aren't many decent content creators, so all the stuff is low-quality/buggy.

I didn't have to verify my age. They just said "***** you better be under 18 or we calling the po po on you.

But anyways, that game kind of sucked. I had no idea what the hell was going on, and people kept playing 5 second versions of I'm blue and some Basshunter song. The controls were confusing as fuck, and I had no idea how to customize my character because they didn't exactly give great detail on it. I did, however, like the fact that you could fly. But that was about it.

The in game money can be exchanged for real world money so it's obviously got value. x_x It's called a micro transaction. It's what a large number of Korean MMOs use to stay in business. People buy a secondary version of the game's currency which can be used to purchase "better" equipment/items. Slightly different from gold sellers in that the companies encourage this.
