I personally feel that the whole secret-ballot system should be abolished, if you're going to vote for someone who you believe in, why keep it a secret, however there could be reprocussions to this and i was just wondering what the general consensus was, what with you Yanks about to be voting and whatnot.

Of course we should have a secret ballot, otherwise people could not vote without fearing repercussion.

Its about providing the freedom that accompanies anonymity.

First poll I've ever seen with 100% in one category. Don't take it too hard, but there's really not much room for practical debate here.

The whole idea of a secret ballot is to prevent external pressure on voters. Take for example, countries where people are threatened with torture or death if they do not vote for party X. It also enables those who have switched political parties greater protection from peer pressure.

I'm sorry but what? of course it should be secret! they made is secret for a reason. people went around killing people who voted wrongly in their opinion, the same would happen. and it also leads to discrimination of people by their politics which would all and all most likely lead to a civil war in whatever country.

honestly I think you'd of got more people agreeing with you if you just went "Poll: is standing in the middle of the motorway a good idea?"

Yep, that.

Ever read up on some older Chicago politics? People stood outside the booths and threatened voters. Police had to be stationed at each of the voting places just to keep the peace. Now imagine if everyone knew who each person voted for.

I still don't understand why United States finds it practical to have their rigamarole of voting as opposed to just everyone voting and counting up the votes in total.

Because that would take too long! Waaaaaaaaaah!

Seriously all this nonsense about the Electoral College and everything... so useless. The population majority vote should be the significant one, not the EC vote.

If you want to let people know who you voted for, tell them in a conversation. Hell, post it here if you really want. But nobody should be forced to let people know who they are voting for; while it may allow for the possibility of vote-rigging, the voters would be kept safe from blackmail and peer pressure.

How could anyone be so ignorant of one of the most important measures that democracy is preserved?

not everyone wants their political position known, some people like to go to rallys and stuff, some people prefer not to talk politics, to some it's pretty private, so why would it be so bad to keep it private, do you really need everyone too see you vote?

An addition to my feelings on this is that I'd like a "non of the above" option when voting. So the people that don't vote because they don't see the point in picking the lesser of two evils won't go unheard.

If you vote for that person you like, I will beat the shit out of you.

Welcome to Zimbabwe enjoy your stay!

Its a important thing to keep people from feeling pressured or unsafe. If you wan't people to know who you vote for thats fine, but what about those who wish to remain hidden?
