Yeah I have...
Went through a really dark time when I was 16-19, punching myself mostly (people asked too many questions on the cuts).
Around the same time I started purging (vomiting mostly)... Kinda still do this...

I used to, mostly when I was younger. After I got diagnosed as Manic Depressive it mostly put a stop to it.

Generally I don't tell people because they always assume you do it for attention, like an emo kid that slits his wrists so people will think he's so tortured, but I used to cut my shoulders mostly, deliberately so people wouldn't find out.

I think that's what so few people realise, they hear 'self harm' and immediately think 'slitting wrists which everyone ca then see.' There are plenty of self harmers who might hurt their legs, or their torsos, or their upper arms like I did, because if you're genuinely self harming then a lot of the time you'll want to keep it from people.

No. Because I know fixing my problems is better than being a pathetic cutter. You know all the things you could be doing in the time it takes to bring your self farther down that can get you higher? Like jacking off. Cutting is almost an excuse to not do anything about your issues and just sit in your room with whatever and draw blood. So kids, don't hurt yourself...

including an upside-down crusifix on my right peck, dont really know why I did it, it seemed like a good idea at the time :/
or you'll end up with a symbol on your nipple. That can't be good.

I tend to hit my head against something if something incredibly unexpected and apparently illogical happens in a game, or when I'm programming something.

The kind of thing you're mainly referring to, though, I have never once even considered. Don't know exactly what drives people that way...

I have never harmed myself physically. Though there have been times when my anger at myself for doing stupid things has caused me pain. Although I can't claim to fully understand the position of people that do I think I can understand some reasoning behind resorting to such actions. I just hope that I never find myself in their position.

I have, and still do occasionally.
Through various things. It's mainly because i have a massive pain tolerance, honestly sometimes i've cut my arm because i was bored and wanted to see how sharp my knife was and what kind of wound it would produce.

Then there's the other end of the scale, where i constantly punch hard things for seemingly no reason. Sometimes when i'm angry, other times when i'm bored. I'm constantly punching a hollow steel support at work.

It's a fairly destructive habit, but pain helps me to concentrate and think, and i rarely do anything that does any lasting damage.

Experienced, done for the same reason people become anorexic or bulimic. It's about controlling your body and pushing thresholds. Never showed anyone but my friend who "practiced" and never really wanted anyone to see, so attention was out.

Some people drink or do drugs to cope, others do constructive things...self-harm is probably one of the less destructive addictions you can have. Scars are ugly, but better than damaged liver/ kidney, et. al.

I cut and bite myself (which I do) on occasion. Trust me, it's way better than taking 'medication' for my depression. Like hell I will be just another pill-popping zombie.

Never myself, good friend of mine used to when she was depressed and bulimic.
She is all better now though and that makes me smile :)

For those willing to talk about it, I'm curious to hear the escapist's experiences with self harm - have you ever deliberately hurt yourself? What were you going through at the time? Or if you know someone who has. If you have no experiences with it, what are your opinions on it?

I'm wanting to know other people's experiences with self harm and I want to get some other perspectives on it. Let's keep this serious, as this can be a sensitive issue. And don't feel obliged to contribute
Due to severe ticks and a high pain threshold I often scratch my self to blood without noticing (until later). But I suppose this topic is about conciously doing it and why so. So I can't participate any further than this, since these things are completely subconsious in my case.

OK I don?t self harm and I have had it affect my life in two occasions. The first was my sister who was bullied at school because of her taste in music. She use to cut her arms and back of her legs. It had a rather large affect on my family. The second occasion was with my previous girlfriend she was a complete nut case she cut herself because her friend did there was no other reason for it I?m happy I broke up with her worst part was she continued to cut herself even after I told her how it messed up about 3 years for my family yet she still did it.

Well not actually self harm, when I have to cry I drive the nail of one finger into another which usually keeps my eyes dry becaus occupies my mind with pain rather than with crying.

I drink, I assume I'm harming my liver.

Other than that, I used to hit myself in the head with a metal ruler, just for kicks.

I never cut myself, no. But I went on a self-destructive binge for a very long time.
Drinking to forget. Angry at myself. Violent, self-escapist shit.

And I fucking hate what I did because of it.

A friend of mine used to do it once in a while, but only if she was really upset over something. She once blamed me for doing it really badly and I felt so guilty.

I did once and immediately regretted it. Never again.

Unless you count the rare "bang my head on the wall for a minute for being so stupid", or the fact that I take scalding hot showers.....No, I have not self-harmed.

There's enough in life that'll hurt you. No need to do it yourself.

i'm too cool for self-harm. also keeping things serious is boring, why would we want to do that?

to me it simply seems foolish. childish. immature. it's like simply being an attention whore.
