Poll: Self-Righteousness

(Note: I searched this, and was actually surprised that nothing came up.)

What do you think of self-righteous people?
You know who I mean, the people who criticize everything you do because it isn't "green" or "ethical" or "legal".
The people who protest nearly every little thing that goes on in the world. The people who believe that they are right, and that everyone else is wrong.
And while the above paragraph may betray my emotions towards these people somewhat, I do believe that a little bit of self-righteousness can be a good thing. If nobody ever stood up for what they believed, the world would be a lot worse off. And while I do believe that these people are nearly always hypocrites, that doesn't matter as much if their views have a point.
i guess my belief is: "Self-righteous people are rather annoying, but sometimes they have a point. They should always be balanced out by cynicists, in order to preserve the natural order of things, and so that the ideological never overwhelms the practical."

Sometimes they have a point, but people can decide for themselves you know. The religious buggers who turn up on my door make me break things though.

I don't mind people who criticize other people, as long as they either (a) preface criticism with lists of their own faults, or (b) only offer their opinion to people who ask for it.

Yes I hate these people.

But usually they spend most of their time mocking the other self-righteous people. The pious religion nuts and the egotistical atheists are constantly at each others throats.

I go to a Christian school. I'm a Christian myself and I understand people like this, but they drive me crazy.

I had some people leave my lunch table because I said "boobs". Not even in a sexual or offensive manor.

Or a few popular phrases:
"Metal music is evil."
"Euphemisms are as evil the words themselves!"

Self-righteousness is great. I love self-righteousness. It means that no matter what you say, you are right.
And if someone is being self-righteous you can call that shit on them.

Very annoying, but what if that person that was always on your ass about how you shouldn't smoke and bla bla bla ended up being your docter after being diagnosed with cancer. Its that situation were that annoying ************ was right and it will kill you on the inside, so i try to to completely count them out unless they are complete lunies.

Everyone is entitled to be self-righteous in my opinion, however (and this is a BIG however):

-The moment you become a parrot for someone else' rhetoric and spend your time spouting more of Bill O'Badly's/Rush Limbo's/(insert democratic talking head)/etc., talking points than your own views...or

-The moment you think, for even an instant that just because you have the right to be self-righteous you therein have the right to impose your viewpoints on me...

I'll freaking *end* you--in the figurative/argumentative sense.

All else, I keep to myself if they keep to themselves.

I am smug and bordering on self-righteous. However I only really try to point out when someone says something so idioticly wrong that I have to pause for min to wonder how they could even come up with that statement.

I am smug cause I am correct 99% of the time, and the times I am wrong where simply when I doubted myself for a minute.

That is only true of those that parrot others beliefs. The ones that form their own opinions can typically argue why they formed them. Even if that argument only circles around itself.

No, sorry the intent was to simply not *only* name republican figure-heads but also a democratic one because I hate it when people parrot either, really. I, however, couldn't think of one that annoyed me off the top of my head while at work so I tried to generalize and the intent was lost.

A guy I know had a "turn off electricity Saturday" that he expected us all to follow.

When we asked him about it, he said it was OK because you could still use your phone (and any internet capacities that has), clocks and any equipment you might need to work, but NOT electric lights.

He went to bed at 5 in the afternoon and set his alarm for midnight after coming home from work (that he'd started at 10am), just so he could say he honestly went through with it.


I'm gonna go with hypocrite.

Dude, that's uncanny. That's almost the same scenario at my school, except I have some more relaxed, moderate people as friends. It works.

But hypocrites and self-righteous people across the board are quite annoying.
