2011 is going to be a good years for sequels, especcialy those who end with the number 3.
Just an example; Gears of war 3, Uncharted 3, Mass effect 3, Resistance 3, Kilzone 3, Dirt 3, Cod modern warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Far cry 3 and even Max payne 3
So.... whats your opinion on sequels?

Sequels give the developers a chance to correct mistakes, add content and continue the storyline.

So I support sequels.

There is a lack of a middle ground here. Sequels on the whole are nothing to rejoice, Some of theme are fine but on the whole there are far too many of them every year in comparison to the new IPs.

So I'll vote they Destroy Uniqueness, but only because they rank 3 / 10 on my enthusiasm scale.

Depends on the property I guess.

Bioshock 2 was unnecessary in terms of storyline, and didn't really do anything all that interesting with the game-play mechanics. It was just a quick way to cash in on a surprise hit.

Mass Effect 2 on the other hand...WOW. A large improvement on the first game in terms of game-play, the story continued to evolve and in the end I was left wanting more which is what a good sequel should do.

I'll be the first to admit that the Legend of Zelda series follows alot of the same patterns, in fact one could argue that there haven't been any major changes to the franchise's format since Link to the Past (for 2d games) and Ocarina of Time (for 3d). However each new game in the series offers just enough new things to keep you interested and keep people buying and playing the games.

They aren't inherently bad. Hell, some are great. I love me some Half Life 2 and I am very much looking forward to Mass Effect 3.

But they have this unfortunate tendency to result in stagnation.

Yes CoD, I'm looking at you.
